The whereabouts of Matt Lauer, nine years after getting fired due to sexual misconduct allegations
Matt Lauer’s Life at Present, Nearly Ten Years After He Was Fired From Today
It’s been almost 10 years after Matt Lauer was sacked from Today due to multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault.
Lauer got the sack in November 2017, after NBC got a complaint regarding “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,” as co-anchor Savannah Guthrie mentioned during the show.
One of the complainants of Lauer, Brooke Nevils—who accused Lauer of raping her during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics—is revealing more of her story in the recently published memoir, Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe.
Brooke Nevils wrote in her published extract to The Cut, how she felt after what happened and later brought significant attention to the Lauer’s ground fall after the revelation that he was involved in some kind of sexual misconduct during his tenure on television.

Brooke Nevils Returns to the Issue Following a Matt Lauer Day Came Back to Spotlight
Brooke Nevils, a former NBC news producer, tells of reaching a turning point after her allegations against Matt Lauer, saying she was left spiraling from the whole affair.
“I hardly recognized what a mess I’d become,” Nevils marked. “Compulsive, defensive, and drinking heavily, that’s how I described myself. I was convinced I had made a mess of my life and hurt and embarrassed all my loved ones. It wasn’t long before I would be in a psychiatric hospital, where I found myself so worthless and damaged that I thought the world would be better without me.”
Nevils’ suit came before Lauer’s dismissal from Today in November 2017, which was followed by new allegations of sexual misconduct. Lauer has raped Nevils, said that he did not and wrote in a 2019 letter to Variety that their encounter was consensual, however, he also admitted that there was “enough truth in these stories” to make him “feel embarrassed and ashamed,” a statement which was read on air by his former colleagues.
Since Nevils’ autobiography has been spotlighted again, the question is being asked again: where is Matt Lauer now – almost ten years after the accusations of harassment and assault?
Matt Lauer Was Let Go in 2017 After NBC Got Sexual Misconduct Complaints
In the fall of 2017, Matt Lauer was pulled off the air from Today after NBC was informed of a complaint accusing him of “inappropriate sexual behavior,” which Savannah Guthrie revealed during the show.
According to NBC, there were two more complaints of which they were unaware. One was a person who had worked with Lauer in the past and was on the job when this happened who said that he sexually assaulted her at his office in 2001.
More women, who want to remain anonymous, released statements accusing him of sexual harassment after his firing. Addie Zinone, a former employee of the Today show, told Variety in December 2017 that in 2000, she had a consensual relationship with Lauer and called it a “relationship,” but stated that she “ultimately felt like a victim because of the power dynamic.”

Matt Lauer Denies Rape Charges, Describes Sexual Encounter With Brooke Nevils As “Consensual”
After being fired, Matt Lauer released a statement that Savannah Guthrie read live, in which he claimed that some of the claims against him “were untrue or mischaracterized,” but he also recognized how his behavior had affected those close to him.
“I am sorry for my disgrace now being shared by the people I love most,” Lauer said. “It will take a lot of time and soul searching to sew up these wounds, and I am ready to start that work. It is now my full-time job The last two days have really made me diagnose my own defects and, frankly, I’ve been humbled by it.”
In an October 2019, Variety featured a passage from Ronan Farrow’s Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators which revealed Brooke Nevils’ accusation of Matt Lauer forcibly anally raping her at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Nevils informed Farrow that she “refused multiple times” and was “too drunk to consent,” according to the report.
In a letter to Variety, Lauer rejected the rape claim and said the incident was “an extramarital, but consensual, sexual affair.”
“The version Brooke tells is full of lies designed to mislead the reader into thinking they had an abusive encounter,” Lauer wrote. “But the truth is exactly the opposite.”
Matt Lauer Began Dating Businesswoman Shamin Abas After His Divorce
A couple of years after the sexual misconduct allegations, Matt Lauer’s wife, Annette Roque, decided to divorce. They had three children together: Jack, Romy, and Thijs.
Once the divorce was finalized, Lauer started a romantic relationship with businesswoman Shamin Abas, a person he had been acquainted with for more than twenty years.
People magazine quoted an insider in January 2023, saying, “Initially, they started dating from a strong friendship solidly grounded in the business they did together. Over the years, the love has blossomed quite naturally. They avoid the spotlight as much as possible but are very happy together and have no interest in leading a life of a celebrity. They are below the radar and very private. They are taking pleasure in their lives.”

Source Reveals That Matt Lauer Was Considering a Media Comeback in 2025
Back in November 2025, the source informed People that Matt Lauer was gradually resuming his career planning.
“He’d love to find a way back into the media world, at least in a part-time TV role,” said the insider. “He’s been talking to some people about it.”
The article seemed to conflict with statements from the previous year. In November 2024, a friend confided in People that Lauer was content with his life and that he had no plans of going back to work.
“He’s actually doing fine and happy,” the friend told. “He doesn’t and he doesn’t have to work. He’s not looking. He was a journalist at heart and he did some impactful political interviews that spanned his career, but the current cycle of politics is so dull that even the most seasoned people who have been doing it for a long time are not really excited to cover.”
In a 2026 Memoir Excerpt, Brooke Nevils Relives Alleged Assault and Its Aftermath
Brooke Nevils detailed her allegation that Matt Lauer raped her and revealed the emotional turbulence she went through after reporting the incident to NBC in an excerpt from her memoir, which The Cut published in January 2026.
Nevils said she was physically hurting the next morning after the alleged first assault and that the pain was “undeniable”.
“I was hurting whenever I tried to walk,” she confessed. “I was hurting whenever I tried to sit. I was hurting whenever I tried to remember.”
Besides, she announced that the same day, Lauer supposedly sent her an email saying something like, “You never call and never write — therefore, my feelings are hurt! How are you?”
“I didn’t know how to answer, but I was certain that if I asked anyone for help, things would get even worse,” Nevils explained. “Shameful secrets have this effect. When you trust someone, you kind of give them power over you. I was completely isolated from everyone, and I was publicly struggling.”

Matt Lauer’s Current Life
According to different sources, Matt Lauer is currently residing a “peaceful life” in the Hamptons, New York, and most of his time is spent with family and friends.
“Matt has a group of friends, some of whom date back to the heyday of his NBC fame,” a source told People magazine. “Matt is a wonderful father, and he has really made up for it by spending time with them during their adolescence. He enjoys being with them and has always been a great cheerleader for whatever they have been interested in. He is devoted to his children.”
Even though he mostly keeps a low profile, Lauer was seen at a few public occasions such as the wedding of Don Lemon in New York City in April 2024. An insider revealed that he is “not as scared as before to be seen when he goes out” referring to at the period when he had just left NBC.”
