Here’s what you need to know from the past films to fully appreciate the story’s progression.
“X” (2022) The Beginning of the Trilogy
The first two movies in this captivating trilogy were shot back to back, with “X” now MaXXXine being released in March (2022). The plot unfolds against the background of nineteen seventy nine with an adult film crew arriving at a farm house in the country side. On this innocent looking farm, there is an old couple Howard played by Stephen Ure and his wife Pearl who are living there. They plan to shoot their amateur pornographic movie called “The Farmer’s Daughters” at this seemingly quiet farm house.
The movie features Mia Goth as Maxine and Brittany Snow as Bobby-Lynne; the two are main stars. Both work at a burlesque club in Houston, where they are excited to be part of the cast for this new film. Wayne is portrayed as a studly, middle-aged cowboy by Martin Henderson, who also acts as the producer and director of this film being shot in Texas. There’s also Jackson who is Scott Mescudi or Kid Cudi acting as an executive producer and playing the role of single male porn actor among them. Jackson also happens to be Bobby-Lynne’s boyfriend. But RJ, played by Owen Campbell, will direct the film with Jenna Ortega playing his girlfriend Lorraine holding a boom mic.
The tranquility of Pearl’s farm starts to change when it gets dark, the crew has become Pearl’s target since she is an old woman who is bent on revenge. What made her do these terrible things is not fully revealed until next time, but there was one interesting detail: young Pearl looked very much like Maxine does now. Meanwhile, it turns out that Mia Goth even plays old Pearl wearing heavy makeup and prosthetic devices that make her unrecognizable to viewers. Simply put, this adds yet another wrinkle to character development and storytelling.
A Meandering Film Made with Real Emotion
According to Owen, “X” now MaXXXine had real emotion, artistic execution, and individuality which made it more appreciated than any horror flick he had seen in recent years. His review also praised how well “X” paid homage to 1974 classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” while remaining distinct from many other imitators of the horror masterpiece.
Unlike most films that try to mimic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which don’t quite capture its gritty outlaw seventies feel at all, West’s take on it works beautifully, according to Owen. This was followed by the statement that not only does “X” look and feel like it’s from 1979 but the film puts us into a free ride waywardness of that era. For instance, use of songs from Pablo Cruise as needle drops and “In the Summertime” or showing a local televangelist on a black and white TV set barking at his acolytes effectively takes the audience back in time.
While admitting that “X” is no match for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” Gleiberman nonetheless praised it as an endlessly crafty and fun slow-burn terror ride. He applauded it for gradually building tensions towards shocking moments and its own peculiar queasiness quotient. This queasiness comes from ancient demons who appear human despite their ferocity, which makes them terrifyingly grotesque in a subtly understated performance by the director. The movie has got this element of horror right, making it stand out among other movies in this genre.
“The Pearl” (2022) A most X-cellent origin Story
The movie, “Pearl,” was released just half a year after “X” with the curious phrase as tagline “the x-traordinary origin story.” In this prequel, Mia Goth gives a remarkable portrayal of Pearl and digs deep into her past, which is very intricate and dark.
The narrative is set in 1918 and looks at the early years of young Pearl in Texas. The severe upbringing that characterizes her life has been governed by some very strict rules enforced on her by her mother who is an immigrant from Germany called Ruth, portrayed by Tandi Wright. She also has to take care of her sick father sufficed by Matthew Sunderland alongside being herself. Furthermore, during World War I, Howard, played by Alistair Sewell goes for military service leaving his wife all alone and without any necessary help.
All through the movie, Pearl increasingly demonstrates worrisome symptoms of madness. This is seen in how she secretly tortures her father as well as kills farm animals, thereby showing signs of increased instability. Nevertheless, despite these macabre traits, Pearl daydreams about becoming a famous actress or chorus girl against the wishes of her mum. Nevertheless, David Corenswet’s the projectionist sees potential in Pearl and encourages her ambitions.
A descent into violence
Pearl experiences an extreme change in circumstances, following a disagreement with her mother; in rage she went on a killing spree starting with murdering Ruth then her dad too. Moreover she killed her new boyfriend; the projectionist who showed an interest in him previously. These series of cruel acts demonstrate Pearl’s tragic decline into insanity, thus providing it with chilling origins which are consistent with those outlined in ‘X.’
Afterwards, at church near their home Mitsy took Pearl to dance auditions where they danced together. With great energy and enthusiasm, though not yet enough to satisfy the panelists, Pearl has been sent away because they are only looking for a young and fair haired dancer. At this point, in frustration and despairing, Pearl shouts out “Please I’m a star!”
Her sister-in-law Mitsy took Pearl home after crying with her at the church where she suggested that Pearl could say something to make herself feel better by talking to Howard. In this position, Mia Goth as Pearl delivers an incredible nine minute speech. According to William Earl, it is an “acting masterclass” that should make one believe in Oscars.
An Acting Masterclass
Pearl starts off her monologue with the chilling confession “Actually I am not a good person.” The phrase sets up a tone for a very eerie and emotionally charged entire speech. She confesses to being terribly lonely and depressed due to Howard’s absence during his war service. She then speaks candidly about experiencing miscarriage, cheating on him, and becoming homicidal when angry. This soliloquy ebbs and flows showcasing Mia Goth’s undeniable talent as both a singer and an actress-maker thus making it the most pivotal part of this film.
Goth’s versatility was praised by William Earl who wrote, “She flexes every muscle throughout the movie nailing moments both surreal as well as heartfelt.” However, every serious monologue comes with its comic counterpart or at least some unbelievable scenes like when pearl skips around with blood stained axe. Such dissonance between absurdity and sincerity specifically heightens the impact made by the film while highlighting Goth’s prowess on screen.
The intense monologue is followed by the story taking a dark twist. Mitsy, who was trying to console Pearl and give her some comfort, turns out to be Pearl’s last victim in the movie. This tragic ending to Mitsy’s attempt at helping Pearl adds another layer of intricacy and horror to Pearl’s already turbulent tale.
“MaXXXine” (2024) The Last Part of the Trilogy
Mia Goth returns as Maxine Minx in “MaXXXine”, which concludes the eagerly awaited trilogy, her dream of becoming a Hollywood star has brought Maxine this far. She went through thick and thin and eventually landed her first major acting role. However, despite this triumph, Maxine cannot escape her past filled with turmoil. In an interview in January 2023, Mia Goth alluded to how intense the last chapter would be like. “Of all three films, this is the biggest story with the highest stakes,” she teased. By now, Maxine has undergone several trials and transformations.
When we find her in this new world, she has become a formidable force. Her journey in Hollywood leads her through some pretty wild adventures, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. They are led by Kevin Bacon who is legendary; Bobby Cannavale who is talented; Elizabeth Debicki who is captivating; Moses Sumney who is versatile; Michelle Monaghan who is skilled; Lily Collins who is charming; Halsey who is sensational; and Giancarlo Esposito who stands out remarkably among others.
