Melissa Gilbert Pleads for Transformation After the Passing of Hayden Panettiere
Melissa Gilbert has made a plea for better support and greater protective measures for those child stars who are retired from the stage and the studio, following the passing of Hayden Panettiere, Daveigh Chase, and Michelle Trachtenberg. About a week after Panettiere’s death was made known, the 62-year-old Little House on the Prairie star wrote an article urging reform so that young actors can cope with their famous childhood gradually becoming less famous as adults. Gilbert confessed that she hadn’t ever been close friends with Panettiere or worked for very much time with Chase and Trachtenberg, but those deaths were painful to her since she, too, was known mainly through an acting career as a young performer.
Besides that, she also mentioned several other ex-child stars, among them Tatum O’Neal, Dakota Fanning, Elle Fanning, Jodie Foster, Drew Barrymore, and her sister, Sara Gilbert, who are still active. “We are all the same, FemaleFormer ChildPerformers” At first, Gilbert said the death of one of the group would “bring a wave of grief to us all like an electric shock.”Later, she was quoted as saying that when three deaths happen in a very tight timeframe, something serious is likely to be the reason. “We are all very, very sick because something went wrong.”

Melissa Gilbert Discusses the Way Hollywood Used to Treat Her as a Child Star
Melissa Gilbert expressed concern about the movie industry’s increasing mistreatment of child actors and noted that when children face physical or emotional difficulties, they are typically urged to keep working.
She described this as ‘Doctor Show Syndrome’, and she told how over time she got really good at ignoring her sicknesses, injuries, or sadness about her father’s death simply in order to continue with the acting since she had started it in childhood. Gilbert said in an interview that she was sent back to shoot Little House in the Prairie just a few days after her father died when she was only 11 years old. Gilbert said a single grownup from back then wouldn’t have even told her that they knew it was okay to grieve her father’s death because they were afraid that her grief might have made for a poor performance in front of the camera. That she learned to put her profession at the expense of her emotional needs is an idea she still upholds. For her, this meant working almost at the point of collapse many times.
Gilbert also shared that during the shooting of a movie in the state of Oregon, she underwent surgery because her appendix was about to rupture, and still within five days of such a serious operation, she got back to production because she really thought that she had committed, and it was unfair of her to the rest of the team to leave them hanging. Afterwards, and while still being sick, Gilbert kept on doing her scenes. After she could finally fly back home, she was required to be admitted immediately to the hospital. She mentioned seeing and thinking all sorts of things due to the high fever and that it was “scarcely a day” before she had gone down with sepsis
Melissa Gilbert Wants More Protection for Minors Who Star in Films
The guest artist producer said she continued through tough situations because in her fear she would be viewed as unreliable and be called a diva or something that Melissa believed little stars learned very quickly.Gilbert believes that young stars should be let loose and just act their age instead of getting up to work even when emotionally exhausted or physically worn out. The fact is, we as adults are able to work under pressure while also maintaining good health, but the same is not the case with children or teenagers.
According to Melissa Gilbert, these talented kids are in fact, kids, and we should ensure they are allowed to be kids, too.” She further said that in her letter, they need the freedom to say no and not have to face pressure from family support or media coverage constantly. Among other ideas Gilbert had for the industry, she proposed meeting with movie and TV producers to find ways to avoid exploiting minors. She also asked for child actors to have free mental health services easily available to them and for more protection from reporters doing interviews for the magazines.

Melissa Gets Emotional While Talking About Hayden Panettiere’s Daughter
Melissa Gilbert was moved to tears when she talked about Hayden Panettiere’s daughter and how losing her mother at such a young age would affect her. “All I know is something has to be changed,” wrote Gilbert. She went on to say that she kept her mind occupied with the thought of Panettiere’s daughter, who is 11, going through life without her mother, and she herself was 11 years old when her father passed away.
The actress said that thought made her cry as she urged for the protection of child performers, writing, “ENOUGH!”
In the meantime, she is going through a rough time in her life. Seven months ago, Timothy Busfield, her husband, was charged with four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor here in New Mexico. According to the police, the accused was involved in the cases which took place in 2022 and 2023. Busfield is not admitting the charges made against him and is going for a trail in May 2027. It should be noted, however, that the case is still pending and no decision has yet been made for the accused. Gilbert, on her part, has already stated that she is “100% confident” that her husband will be proved innocent.
