Richard Osman: We Grew Up With “No Money” After Dad Walked Out

Richard Osman: Dad Left Us Broke And Mum “Struggled Forever”

Richard Osman has recounted his tough childhood, saying his mother ‘never recovered’ after his father’s adultery confession and the resulting breakdown of their family. The actor’s father, David, left the family in Sussex to be with his mistress in Warwickshire soon after the 9-year-old Richard’s mother learned of his infidelity. Richard acknowledged that his mother only worked a series of jobs before she took a teaching role and admitted that ‘money, or freedom,’ was a scarce resource for them.

Now a famous author and TV personality, Richard is using his wealth to take care of his dear mum, who has gone through the hardships of his childhood.

“My goal is to ensure my mother is never again forced to be a struggler, because she has been a struggler forever. I believe it is about freedom and money. I lost freedom and money, and anyone who has not grown up with money is aware of that. At The Times, he said, “No doubt I now have more money than I ever would have dreamed of, and I know that the safety and the security of my family are some of the things I am most proud of.”

Richard Has “No Interest” In Paternal Family After 20-Year Reunion Flop

Richard and his half-brother lived in different houses, but they were never close, even though they saw each other quite often, because after his father left the family house, all sides of that family cut contact with Richard’s side of the family. ‘It’s all been so good. My father’s family had such a bad time that my aunt and uncle took me in as their son, and we’ve built a wonderful life. We love our family.’

He also stated before that during the program Who Do You Think You Are, Richard’s lack of interest in his paternal family is quite understandable when we think of their estrangement, as the two families are not in touch. According to Radio Times, Richard’s father abandoning the family turned out to be the most horrible thing that ever happened to him, according to Richard.

Even after 20 years they didn’t make up for their estrangement, the quiz show host explained, and since then he has had no ambition to learn more about his predecessors when he was selected as a candidate on the genealogy show.

Richard Osman: Dad’s Family Felt Like “Strangers” After He Left

Richard stated he wasn’t much interested in his father’s ancestors because he was raised in a different setting, and those are basically people he never met. Learning about people you have never met before sounds pretty strange, he remarked.

The TV personality shared his deep-rooted connection with his grandfather Tom ‘Fred’ Wright: ‘I would not be who I am if it weren’t for my grandad,’ he told the television program about this matter, explaining also that if it were possible to choose his profession based on his grandad, it would have been a detective’s.

In addition to that, Richard has revealed his father’s leaving caused him to struggle and develop a “shameful and bizarre” addiction to eating. Roger, a celebrity, has admitted that she considered eating her way of coping with the lack of a father figure during childhood, which resulted in her emotional issues. “That really is traumatic, for sure,” the TV personality shared with the audience on an April episode of John Robins’ How Do You Cope? podcast.

Richard Opens Up On “Betrayal” And Mental Health Struggle

It’s not an easy task to get one’s mind back in the condition of a nine-year-old boy or girl. What is it that you know or remember at the age of nine other than family? The home environment gives a certain sense of safety when you are there. So, for example, if you are suddenly taken away from that safe haven of which you were sure, it surely is a trauma. ‘From what I remember, I did not work through those feelings at the time. Talking‍‌‍‍‌ about your personal emotions just didn’t happen back in those days. The only time you showed any feeling was when it was about family, death, and religion.
Luckily, if I didn’t behave in a way that could raise questions about my state of mind, others didn’t have much to complain ‍‌‍‍‌about.

He further explains, “I could put it aside, push it to the back of my skull, and just ignore my feelings. On the other hand, today’s understanding is that this is a bad idea. I’ve had a quick mind all the time. Thus, I could find my way out of this pain and betrayal I felt, and I presented a smiling and satisfied picture to the world, although I was also a little bit of that kind. But the whole thing comes back one day.’ ‘I would be able to say that in the late twenties and early thirties I was exhausted and there was simply no further running; this new persona, a person who had successfully concealed pain, run away from pain and told an altogether different story.’

I‍‌‍‍‌ ended up alone with my demons, which was a painful way for a child to discover that he had to make peace with them for good when, at that time, he had successfully put them to one side when he was nine years ‍‌‍‍‌old.
