Matthew McConaughey Reveals Why He Hopes His Kids Forge Their Own Path

Matthew McConaughey on Raising Kids: “Be You, Not Me”

Matthew McConaughey talks about the type of father he’ll be, sharing an interesting message with parents of all kinds and especially his fans! Recently, Matthew took some time out to share this and his other projects in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, including talking about the movie The Rivals of Amziah King, his new film in which he portrays a beekeeper and bluegrass musician who, after years apart, reconnects with the former foster daughter and, together with a few others, tries to defend his hive (the honey business).

Taking a closer look at the messages embedded in the characters of the film, Matthew 56, explained the values he’s always had that he would pass on as a legacy to his own kids.

“Every father and mother out there, what kind of wishes would there be for the offspring? You are basically, I think, wanting to pass on some of your core beliefs and things you accomplished during your lifetime,” he said. “Although it wouldn’t be your children if they had a carbon copy of you, you hope they grab some pieces here and there so you can live on even after your departure.” It’s how you remain the same.

Matthew McConaughey Opens Up About Fatherhood and Raising His Three Children

At some point earlier this year Matthew was very much on the same wavelength as a father at his interview with Bear Grylls who is running Wild show. The main star of Interstellar was convinced that the “greatest art” of a man would be to be “a good father to a son or a daughter.”

“A man remains a prince until having kids, and afterwards he turns into a king. Man, I don’t see anything that can compare for importance to man’s doing, ” he shared with Bear Grylls, the show interviewer. “In fact, man, we are mortals. This is the beginning of our immortality, and if we are very fortunate, they also have children so that line continues. I think being a loving and a father to a son or a daughter constitutes an artist, and the one thing that can be the greatest art that a man can make.”

Matthew Says Fatherhood Has Always Been His Greatest Dream

About giving a kid everything you can while being tough where necessary, the actor mentioned to Town & Country in the June 2020 issue that loving your children implies “giving them exactly what they want, ” sometimes, and others, “offering them tough love.”

Loving a child becomes much more difficult if a parent truly cares, he clarified. “The wealthy are able to give their children every want material they have but they rarely have anything else, ” he emphasized, “It takes more energy to say a ‘No’ than it does to a ‘Yes, ‘ it’s much easier to say ‘yes.'”
