Nelly Furtado & other celebrities who reply to body-shamers with an incredible outfit

A Masterclass in Confidence

Nelly Furtado keeps things simple when she is faced with negative comments. They just don’t faze her. After only recently being subjected to all sorts of online gossip about her body and weight, the “Promiscuous” singer gave critics a lesson on how to react appropriately and that too, without uttering so much as a word.

On August 25th at Manchester Pride, the 46-year-old star Nelly Furtado came on stage and showed what she meant by letting her clothes speak for her. What she wore was an oversized T-shirt which, if seen from the side, looked very modest. But the front was adorned with a very descriptive outline of a woman’s torso, with the midriff and the support bra clearly depicted.

Without using any words, it was already quite a direct, sharp and unmistakable reference to the very thing that people were digging through. Nelly Furtado also accessorized the outfit with glittery fishnet tights, pink fingerless gloves, and a colorful pair of boots that were not only eye-catching but also carried a catchy phrase that read: “Better than ever.”

It is not that Nelly Furtado’s outspoken, celebratory view of one’s flaws specifically had just begun. She has time and time again demonstrated that she will not let other people’s perspectives be the determining factor of how she relates to herself. Indeed, Nelly Furtado epitomized exactly that vibe at the beginning of 2025, when she shared a stunning photo sequence of herself clad in a glossy orange bikini. The message Nelly Furtado was sending to both followers and naysayers was not only obvious but also forceful.

In the post made on January 5th she said, “HAVE A BODY NEUTRAL 2025,” and then went on to say, “BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, LOVE WITH EVERY INCH OF YOUR HEART.”

Nelly Furtado setting the Record Straight on Scams and Surgery

Not long after that, Nelly Furtado the Grammy winner revealed that she had been “pushed” to “take some legal steps” against some “frauds.” These people were, it seems, using her image and likeness without her consent to sell various health and beauty services online, which made her want to make it clear that she was not okay with that.

When faced with the unusual situation she found herself in, Nelly Furtado chose to be very honest about it. “I was made aware of the aesthetic pressure of my work this year in a completely new way, at the same time that I reached new levels of self-love and confidence with my inner self,” she stated in her post. Nelly Furtado also directly addressed the rumors by putting them clearly among the ashes: “Let me be clear, I have never had any facial or bodily surgery or enhancement, only for my upper teeth, quite recently, for veneers.”

In denial of the rumors about plastic surgeries, Nelly Furtado still maintained her openness about sharing the real secrets of her glamorous look.

Beauty Secrets and a Message of Self-Love by Nelly Furtado

Additionally, Nelly Furtado did not hesitate to sing the praises of the beauty methods she abstains from. “It is not the case that I have had any kind of injection or filler for my face and lips,” she said. Consequently, her beauty secret is actually the support and attention she gives to a great, old fashioned and immensely professional skin care specialist who has been the source of her beauty since her raw twenty years old age.

The sleep and water-doing were the pre-event necessary routines for her which she summarized as nothing else but “two very simple and natural things, that is to sleep on the back and to take lots of water.”

One more point is that Nelly Furtado revealed some of the behind-the-scenes secrets of the industry that contribute to the creation of the impeccable red carpet look. “In those moments, on the red carpet or at photo sessions, my makeup artist sometimes uses face tape to make my eyes, skin and makeup more lifted,” she said. “At times, my stylist may utilize body tape to transform a certain idea into different silhouettes.”

In the end, the main point the singer of “Maneater” was trying to make was to instill a sense of power and joy of being true to oneself into her fans. Her last thought was a great way to remember it for all. “Be unique and don’t forget that it is very alright with you when you look in the mirror,” she said. “It may also be that you feel like wanting something else.

The truth is we are all adorable little humans just moving around the planet looking for hugs.”

Ava Phillippe

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s daughter, Ava Phillippe, recently captured an utterly absurd and contradictory nature of online body shaming with a single shot that was witty and powerful at the same time.

Commenting on her experience of being simultaneously flamed, she shared a TikTok video on May 3rd explaining that she had sarcastically reached “a major milestone as a woman online” by getting a body critique from two completely opposite sides. A stranger in one instance notified her that she was “too fat” and needed Ozempic in order to her weight to be controlled. Another, however, told her that she was “too thin” and starving herself.

The absurd thing that is at the very heart of this funny story, as Phillippe remarked, was that her mass had not gotten any different between the two remarks—and even if it were so, she would still be correct in saying that it is not their business at all.

She emphasized that moment as a major point of “no one deserves to be picked apart for what they look like,” supporting that we can simply never know the private lives of others behind the screen. Her final comment was a thought of power to all, beauty being the truth “which goes beyond such superficial measures” and cannot be limited by fleeting, contradictory opinions of strangers.

Bebe Rexha

Over time, the online comments about the constant bashing of her body, Bebe Rexha was at her wit’s end. Not long ago, the “I’m Good” singer decided to confront the body-shamers directly, not by a long speech, but simply by a dose of her usual candid, raw truth.

She really put the matter to sleep with that tweet on June 23rd saying it all without wanting to add anything: “I know I got fat. I’m just so sick of people talking about it. NEXT!!!!!!”.

Anyway, she kept going. 33-year-old Bebe came back with a very important point that those who think it is right to comment on other people’s appearances should remember. She disclosed the very basic, most times forgotten situation that “people change their weight”.” She went on saying, “it’s life and you don’t know what people are going through. Meds, disease, etc…” It was a potent call for minimum sympathy and a strong signal that her body is not a topic for public debate.

Rumer Willis

When Rumer Willis posted what she thought was a fun and silly Instagram photo, she was very quickly overwhelmed by unsolicited and hurtful comments, some of which even accused her of being “too skinny” Without choosing to ignore the noise, the House Bunny starlet chose to respond by using the moment as a teaching opportunity.

In her later explanation, she said that even though she knew that she was not accountable to anyone, she was resisting a “barrage of some really inappropriate comments.” She also confessed that she was “really bummed” by the negativity quite a bit since she had been really enjoying the photos made. She even conceded that due to the “weird angle” she was smaller than she is in real life, but she very quickly moved on to the bigger and more important point: that one is just a fact of life.

“Even if you think that it is your job or your right to post unfiltered thoughts or judgments about my body for me and others to read… it still is not,” she said very strongly. She went on to make it very clear that in case of her being “too skinny” or that she “needs to eat” is telling – no one is benefiting from it at all. “I will not tolerate body shaming in any form,” she stated very firmly.

Moreover, if it was still not enough, she reacted, about a week later, with the type of answer that no one bothered to read. She shared a photo of herself very confidently sunbathing in a bikini and accompanied it with a cleverly and empowered caption directed straight at her critics: “For the haters….with love and gratitude kindly [kiss emoji] my [peach emoji], I’ll keep smiling regardless [peace sign emoji].”

Natalie Portman

Nobody could say that a star as extremely private as Natalie Portman is still not affected by the constant watching of the public eye. On February 2021, a few pictures of her on a film set in Australia in a plain dark blue tank top were enough to ignite a wildfire of pregnancy rumors. Instead of allowing the rumors to proliferate or by pass them, Portman decided to act by using her Instagram Stories to end it plainly and definitely.

In a confession that is rare and quite unexpected, she not only rejected the rumor but also blamed the very community that brought about it. “Hey, so I am absolutely not pregnant,” she wrote first, then adding the question to the New York Post and to society which was: “…but still, is it 2021 and nobody has told us that it is not possible to talk about, speculate and comment on a woman’s body shape without getting permission?” Her statement ended with a mere, yet very significant and strong call that encompassed everything: “Do better.”

Christina Anstead

Christina Anstead from Flip or Flop had to deal with the nonstop comments about her figure. After r eviewing a ton of judging comments from online trolls, she came to the conclusion that it was time to set things straight.

In a video shared on her Instagram Story, she reacted sharply to the textual remarks, which were filled with ideas about her supposedly getting “really skinny” or “needing to eat.” Her reasoning was very refreshing in its simplicity and directness. She went on to say that this was actually the weight that she had always been at.

She felt that the misunderstanding was that people had been with her during her pregnancies and thus they had seen her body change. What they were seeing now was just her going back to her starting weight. At the end of the message, she let go of this apprehension with her words: “So don’t worry, everything’s fine.”

Meghan King Edmonds

Meghan King Edmonds, in the raw and public fallout of her divorce from Jim Edmonds, found herself encountering the same old line, only a bit differently phrased, from that unpleasant gang of online haters who told her to “eat a burger.” Neither by ignoring them nor fighting them, she decided to answer them with a completely different approach-radical truth.

In a December 2019 Instagram post, she didn’t simply request for the comments about her shape to cease; she confronted them with a shocking confession. “Quite honestly, to me, I am too thin,” she shared. Nevertheless, she rapidly connected that with the explanation of the infringement of her personal situation, requesting something that was way beyond the giving of advice. “Some grace, I ask for it, please,” she said, pointing out that she was “going through the damn thing with all of the dignity I can gather up as I keep my kiddos first before anything else.

Celine Dion

The first time Celine Dion was called “too skinny” she didn’t just brush the remark off, but rather gave a lesson of great self-confidence as a reply. Without hesitation, she proved that her body is the reflection of her life and her loves. “Is there anything wrong with my body?” she questioned, continuing, “I have never been fat.” She pointed her health up to ballet and stretching, which she practises not for the body but because they “nourish” her “mind, body and soul”.

When it comes to criticism, she has a very straightforward and effective viewpoint. She maintains that criticism is part and parcel of the life in public, yet she will not let it take over her. “I keep what is good for me and leave what is bad for me,” she said. In hardships, she counts on her support system to take care of the negative remarks that really affect her, so she can focus on the things that matter the most – her own well-being and feelings. As she very wisely said, at the end of the day, “you can’t please everyone.”>

Lizzo

Speaking about body confidence, Lizzo has for a long time been extraordinary in her own way, however, she still continuously faces the same online criticism. In June 2020, she chose to dispel the misconception that people have about her by pointing out one fact that people don’t know about her in a now-famous TikTok video.

To make a long story short, she first informed everyone that for five years she had been working out on a regular basis. However, the thing that so many people don’t get is that her motivation is none of their business. “Perhaps that fact might be a shock to some of you,” she said, “that I am not working out to match your ideal body type. Instead, I am working out for my ideal body type.”

So what is her perfect body type? Lizzo-style, her solution was straight, without any apologies, and full-stop for the whole argument. “Do you know what that type is? Your motherf–king business,” she asserted followed by a forceful self-worth statement, “because I am beautiful, I am strong, I do my job and I stay on my job” that negates all possible arguments.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has been a major influence in the arena of body shaming noise, where she stands with her mode of taking radical self-acceptance as her shield.

She revealed a glimpse of the resolute thought-process she has constructed in a 2016 interview with Glamour. She conveyed that in a weak spot, if someone called her fat, she would respond by laughing inside at her own reaction. It’s a support system that is deeply connected to the self-consciousness aspect. “I’m doing everything I can,” she said, “so there’s nothing I could have done to make it happen.”

She later added, interrogating the standards against which she was being judged by, and thus taking apart the pressure with a simple and truthful confession. “I don’t have a six-pack,” she mentioned before going on to say, “Perhaps, I don’t even want a six-pack. It doesn’t sound like an attractive thing to me.”

Halle Berry

One of the most Oscar-awarded actresses, Halle Berry when she shared a nude photo of herself on the internet got a typical, but still a little surprising, response in the shape of an age-shaming rant from an online user. The critic in question, who has since deleted his tweet, decided to deliver his lecture by saying, “Imagine being in your 50s, still posting nudes for attention in menopause when you should be chilling with the grandkids. Aging with dignity is no longer a thing.”

When she got hold of this patronizing and judgmental perspective, Halle Berry could have picked any one of several reactions. She might have rebutted the criticism, brushed it off as not worth her time or got angry and riled up. Instead, she went the route of brilliant and comedic deflection. Her reply was a case study in refusing to confront negativity by negating its argument.

Her retort? A very effective off-topic remark: “Did you guys know the heart of a shrimp is located in its head?

Camila Cabello

During a time when Camila Cabello was consciously avoiding social media to protect her mental health, she abruptly came across a headline which destroyed her whole protective bubble. Acknowledging the point at which she glimpsed that folks were “body shaming” her, she quite extensively and frankly disclosed the incident in a post on her Instagram Stories

She was very upfront about her first reaction and even went on to say that her first emotion was that of insecurity. The moment she saw the pictures, she started to picture how they appeared – the cellulite, the fact that she was not sucking in her stomach. But that first jab very quickly turned into a powerful moment with Camila’s insight. She had a truth moment, reminding herself, “there are always bad photos, there are always bad angles, my body is not some f–king rock, or made up of only muscles, for that matter.”

One aspect of the story that she personally reflected deeply on was how her own introspection grew and transformed into a heartfelt message for her fans, especially for her little sister and young girls like her. She deeply regretted the fact that they were growing up in an “airbrushed world,” where they are continually presented with photoshopped images and, therefore, coming to believe that this artificial perfection is true.

She posted “FAKE IS BECOMING THE NEW REAL,” referring to that we’ve “gotten so far off track on what a woman’s body should look like” that we’ve built a “completely unrealistic”.
Her main message was a strong exhortation, a statement that “cellulite is normal. fat is normal. It’s beautiful and natural.” This marked her protest against “the bulls–t that are rampant today,” a refusal of “buying into the bulls–t today,” and an eloquent invitation to her followers to do the same in resisting those unattainable standards.

Ayesha Curry

What was supposed to be a very positive day turned into a battle for Ayesha Curry as she had to fight off not one but two categories of online shamers. She posted a photo of the family in a happy mood to celebrate Steph’s team going to the Western Conference Finals, but some followers were not talking about the success; they were talking about her

Offended by the assumption in one comment that she might be pregnant again, Ayesha responded with a short funny line and truth. “Definitely not LOL,” she said, adding “My 30 lb son is just giving me backache in every photo.”

However, the unsolicited comments took a more unpleasant direction when another person chose to talk about the health of her son. He said a 30-pound child must have “serious health issues.” The celebrity chef answer was very quick, direct, and totally at variance with the comment: “Are you kidding me? No. Absolutely no.”

Jana Kramer

Only a week after delivering her baby, Jana Kramer was overwhelmed with a situation that no newly mother should experience as she had to defend her body against a flood of online criticism. Not to show off another adorable baby picture, but to share an outburst of her frustration that seemed to have been brewing for some time, the podcast host made her Instagram rant.

She was very explicit about the impossible situation that she was going through. A picture that she posted was immediately followed by a barrage of unreasonable comments and assumptions. Among other things, people claimed that she went for a tummy tuck, they thought she had a personal chef and a trainer always ready for her. In fact, she was far away from the explained version.

A new mother who had just been through a cesarean section, still in pain, and taking medication. The photo of her previous one was made with a tightly wrapped belly bandit and high-waisted pants, she disclosed, not with the help of surgery or a group of professionals.

But her annoyance was not solely aimed at the false assumptions that she had to correct. She was perplexed and saddened at the same time that she needed to defend herself. She had initially planned to share a completely raw and unfiltered photo of her stomach to show her healing process, but the negativity that she had already received made her decide not to share the photo.

She found herself caught between the devil and the deep blue sea: she was criticized for looking “too good,” and she knew that if she had gone with the release of the raw reality of her postpartum body, she would have been criticized too.

Consequently, she made a heartfelt and powerful plea. “Why do we women have to compare ourselves to each other and then shame?” she inquired. She asked comparison to be stopped, telling her followers that each woman’s body is different, that each one gets better at a different pace and that is the reason why each woman’s body is beautiful in its own unique way. Her message was a very simple yet profound one, a call for kindness not only towards others but just as importantly, towards ourselves.

Candace Cameron-Bure

In April 2018, a photo of Candace Cameron-Bure dinner with her son, Lev, could have been interpreted as a simple and sweet moment of sharing often sees things quite the opposite.

One of the comments that appeared on the photo was quite nasty and unsolicited, the writer saying, “All that [exercising], and you still look like you weigh more than your husband, did you change your diet?”

However, the star of New Girl wasn’t going to let the comment pass without a rebuttal. She did so in a manner that combined facts and class perfectly.

“If a 25 inch waist looks big to you…then you’re looking through an altered lens,” she said and went on to add a courteous, “Be well,” which was like saying, “Go ahead with your negativity, but I won’t lose my sleep over it.”
