Jake Latimer Gives Insight into His Recovery Journey After Getting Bitten by a Venomous Snake on Survivor 49
Survivor 49’s Jake Latimer Details Recovery After Venomous Snake Bite
He recalls the moment a banded sea krait latched onto his foot before he was airlifted from Fiji
Jake Latimer may not have emerged as the winner of Survivor, but he is definitely a living-Meeta. He had to be airlifted from Fiji and was subsequently disqualified after the highly venomous banded sea krait took a bite out of him while he was in the water near his team’s beach. “I opened my eyes, and the snake is latched onto the bottom of my foot, mouth wide open,” Jake shared with Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Oct. 9. “At that moment it didn’t felt like pain. A mild tingling was the only sensation I could feel. “And that’s when I yelled to Alex: ‘Guys, I think this thing just bit me!’ Then, as we saw on the show, everything else kind of followed after that.”
Facing the bite while expecting his first child
At the time, the 36-year-old was anticipating his first child, but after the incident, he was transported by boat to the production’s base camp for the medical team of the show to treat him, they were “making him feel safe,” he said. He recalled, “That’s when it gets real, man. Someone told me that the snake was very venomous and that I need care, like, now. When I was lying on that stretcher… you saw me say, ‘I’m going to be a dad…’ I’m getting emotional about it, even now.”
He added, “But it’s like, I’m going to be a dad. Am I ever going to get off this island? Am I going to see my child? Ever meet my child? That’s when it sunk in, because I had tubes coming out of me. I had oxygen masks on.”

Respecting the call — and a life‑changing homecoming
“His decision, in the end, I respect it without any doubt,” he said while referring to the mixed feelings. “Every day I do think through it. Every night I dream of it. Despite that, I really respect their decision and I have no hard feelings towards them for pulling me out of the game.”
Just a twist of fate, Jake’s kid was born in less than 48 hours from the time he landed back home in the United States.
“His decision, in the end, I respect it without any doubt,” he repeated when being asked about his feelings of being withdrawn from the game. “Every day I do think through it. Every night I dream of it. But I really respect their decision and I have no hard feelings towards them for pulling me out of the game.”
A blessing in disguise — faith, fate, and fatherhood
Besides, the delivery of Jake’s child was very simple and took place less than 48 hours after his arrival back in the States. He looked back, “God works miracles beyond our understanding. It seems to me that God put that serpent in the way just to get me home. And I hate it with all my heart because I wanted that game so bad, but at the same time, I got to see the birth of Jax, and that’s an experience worth a million dollars. Moreover, I was there for my wife so it’s a blessing in disguise. No, I will never get the chance of doing it again, the moment of my child being born, even though, as I said, I still have some things to sort out out there.”
