Timothée Chalamet Wins SAG Award for Best Actor and Says ‘I Want to Be One of the Greats’: ‘I’m in Pursuit of Greatness’

Remarkable Achievement

In a “simple twist of fate,” Timothée Chalamet has officially made history. He earned his first major awards precursor for his transformative portrayal of Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s biographical film, A Complete Unknown. The project, as such, has gained a lot of recognition for jumping into the life of one of America’s most famous music personalities. Along with the hearty attitude of Chalamet, he shared his thoughts regarding the sense of victory at which he has achieved. He was amazed that he accomplished this goal and at the same time expressed his respects to an iconic artist who, back then, left an eternal impact on culture.

In doing so, Chalamet dug into a tireless commitment that, in his perspective, distinguished him from a new point of devotion. Chalamet mentioned in his acceptance speech, “I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness.” He remarked that while it is out of the ordinary to discuss striving for lofty goals so openly, he could not but help to give expression to his ambition.

Throwing in contagious energy into his speech, he glorified his own passion for the performing arts, telling the story with heroes like Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis, just as much as with icons of the likes of Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps. He stressed that the award was not a confirmation of greatness for him; instead, he labeled it as “a little more fuel” and “a little more ammo to keep going.” His passion for excellence and his fortitude to break barriers expose the fact that he is into ever-evolving and being better than his former self.

A Mother’s Influence

Timothée Chalamet began his remarks by honoring his mother, who has worked at Actors’ Equity for four decades. With evident pride, he underlined how important her presence and example have been in his own path. She instilled in him the discipline and insight needed to navigate a competitive industry. His heartfelt reference to her achievements linked his success to their family journey, implying that the resilience and persistence necessary for this business were shaped early on by her commitment. This personal moment cast a warm light on Chalamet’s respect for the people who contributed to his upbringing, illustrating a genuine sense of gratitude for a parent who helped him hone his craft long before he stepped onto any grand stage.

Transitioning into the topic of his five-and-a-half-year quest to portray Bob Dylan, Chalamet chose not to diminish the effort required. Instead, he openly discussed how meaningful it was, declaring, “I poured everything I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero.” The passion he invested shines through in his recollection, revealing it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Chalamet made it clear that a significant portion of this movie’s triumph rested on the dedication of everyone involved, including Monica, Edward, and the entire cast who took on the challenge of revamping a biographical genre that might otherwise feel predictable. According to him, each participant approached the project with maximum energy, thereby enabling a fresh and riveting exploration of Dylan’s life.

A Record-Breaking Win

Toward the end of his speech, Timothée Chalamet conveyed his deep appreciation for the communal spirit behind this accomplishment. Even though he is aware that the biopic field can be considered tired, he insisted that their collective passion revitalized the film, preventing it from falling into stale territory. He credited the cast and crew for the creativity they demonstrated and the risk-taking mindset they embraced. By acknowledging how many others contributed to the success of A Complete Unknown, he underscored that this award belongs to everyone who believed in the project. He, therefore, mentioned that the work he has done and the award he has received might place him among the greats, but they easily guide the journey for him to be where he wants to be.

At age 29, Timothée Chalamet becomes the youngest recipient of the SAG Award for best actor, surpassing Nicolas Cage, who was 32 when he won for Leaving Las Vegas “1995”. Adrien Brody remains the youngest best actor winner at the Oscars. Even so, this new triumph secures Chalamet a remarkable distinction among his peers. The competitive field leading up to this moment was filled with established talents, underscoring just how significant his achievement is. Although he has been recognized by multiple organizations over the years, this latest honor elevates him in a way no prior accolade has.

An Impressive Field

In clinching the SAG Award, Chalamet triumphed over fellow Oscar nominees Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), as well as Daniel Craig (Queer), who missed an Oscar nod in favor of Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice). That group alone demonstrates how close the race was. Adrien Brody serves as Chalamet’s closest competition in overall awards context, with both men setting a youth record for best actor accolades. The result not only underscores Chalamet’s ever-growing prestige but also testifies to the powerful performances.

Chalamet’s win at the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards “2022” is his first SAG win after two previous solo nominations for Call Me by Your Name (2017) and Beautiful Boy (2018), in the supporting actor category. He also boasts ensemble nominations for Lady Bird “2017”, Don’t Look Up (2021), A Complete Unknown, and even the TV drama series Homeland back in “2013”. He has been able to creep from a young breakout star to a major award winner, gradually, however, he has always been in the spotlight for various roles in film and television. With each new accolade, he notifies the casting directors that he is one of the most sought-after actors of his generation.

Despite the significance of his SAG win, Oscar voting concluded on Feb. 18—two days before these latest victories were announced. Historically, no actor has seized the best actor Oscar through only a SAG Award precursor. Moreover, since the SAG Awards began in 1994, only six performers in any of the four acting categories have managed to claim the Academy Award with only a SAG win propelling them forward. Nonetheless, Chalamet’s fresh award may still serve as a morale booster heading into the ceremony. Regardless of the final Oscar outcome, his rapid ascent continues to fascinate both audiences and industry insiders.
