Brian Cox Slams Margot Robbie, Daniel Day-Lewis in a Fierce Interview: ‘I’m Just Going to Say What I Want to Say’
Brian Cox Disapproves of Margot Robbie’s Casting as Cathy in Wuthering Heights
Brian Cox recently shared with The Times UK his view that Margot Robbie should not have been cast as Cathy in the newest Wuthering Heights film, expressing his opinions in a Brian Cox blunt interview.
Taking a jab at Robbie’s being an Australian, Cox put on a “mock Australian accent” and said, “‘Keith Cliff! It’s me, Cathy! How ya doing, Keith? Awright?’ ‘Yeah, I’m awright!'” thus referring to Margot’s early appearance in the Australian soap *Neighbours*.
Cox stated that the 1939 version of Emily Brontë’s masterpiece is, in his opinion, one of the best films ever made, and with a chuckle he confessed, “Margot Robbie is definitely too beautiful for that character. I mean, if anything, she should have that Gypsy look but then again it’s not really fair of me to judge. It may end up being a great movie.”

He Opens Up about Argument with Daniel Day-Lewis and Jeremy Strong
In that same discussion, Brian Cox revealed that his dispute with Daniel Day-Lewis is continuing, which started when Cox took issue with his Succession matinee co-star Jeremy Strong’s dedication to the role in 2023. Lewis, who served as Strong’s role model, is said to have told Cox last year to get off his “soapbox.”
Upon being questioned whether he got in touch with Day-Lewis, Cox humorously said that he did not, adding, “This has nothing to do with Dan Day-Lewis. Dan Day-Lewis, he’s a gentleman. He never causes [the filming process] to be disturbed.”
The Emmy Award winner further revealed that he refrained from talking about Strong because his former on-screen son “literally begged me to stop talking about him.”
Brian Reacts To Jeremy Strong And Other A-List Actors
Brian Cox talked positively about Jeremy Strong, calling him “a good actor” and “a wonderful actor, ” but he disapproved of “all the stuff” with method acting that comes with it. “It’s just the theatrics that go with it. You see kids they never say, ‘What’s my motivation?’ They just do it!”
Most recently he came out with this opinion of A-list actors. Through interviews and his 2021 memoir he threw in his opinion about such big stars as Johnny Depp and Ian McKellen.
Speaking of Depp, Cox described the actor as “so overblown” and “so overrated” and, on the same topic, he confessed that it was a piece of good luck for him not to accept the role of Jonathan Pryce in the *Pirates of the Caribbean* franchise.
When it comes to McKellen, with whom he co-starred in the movie , Cox said that his way of acting is “not to my taste.”

Brian Cox’s Unfiltered Critiques of Actors and Filmmakers
Brian Cox has never hesitated to express his direct opinions about other actors and filmmakers.
For example, he said that Edward Norton was “a pain in the arse” and referred to Kevin Spacey as “a stupid, stupid man.”
Film directors and playwrights have also been targets of Cox’s biting remarks. He called Quentin Tarantino “meretricious, ” Michael Caton-Jones “a complete arsehole, ” and David Hare “a see you next Tuesday.”
Cox, who played Winston Churchill in the 2017 film *Churchill*, also disapproved Gary Oldman’s Oscar-winning portrayal of Churchill in *Darkest Hour*, referring to it as “cobblers” and “a crowd-pleasing farrago.”
Brian Cox on His Bluntness: ‘I’m Gonna Say What I Want to Say’
The Times UK asked Brian Cox if his habit of speaking very frankly had cost him friends or caused him any problems. He answered with a laugh, “I don’t even know whether it’s caused me problems. My wife keeps telling me, ‘Brian, be careful. Brian, be careful.'”
He went on, “I think, ‘Forget it, I don’t even want to be careful anymore! I’m turning 80 this year. Forget it! I’m gonna say what I want to say.'”
