Bret Hanna-Shuford, Broadway Alum and Social Media Influencer, Passes Away at 46 During Treatment for a Rare Cancer: ‘Our Hearts Are Broken’
Broadway celebrity and ”Broadway Husbands” star Bret Hanna-Shuford Dies at 46
Bret Hanna-Shuford, Broadway celebrity and social media star who gained popularity by sharing his family life with husband Stephen Hanna-Shuford and their young son Maverick on the ”Broadway Husbands” account, passed away after only five months of cancer diagnosis. He was only 46 years old.
The couple’s social media accounts posted the news, and Stephen indicated that his husband passed away in the early hours of Saturday, Jan. 3.
“We are sorry, but it is with great sorrow that we announce that we early this morning said farewell to the greatest man, husband, and Papa in the whole world,” the post said. “Bret Hanna-Shuford died peacefully in this world surrounded by the love of his family. We are deeply saddened, but we will keep doing things the way he would be proud of us.”

Bret Hanna-Shuford Suffered Two Very Rare, Serious Immune and Blood Cancers at the Same Time
Bret Hanna-Shuford was found to have two life-threatening conditions that severely compromised the immune system — an aggressive hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) — in the summer of 2025.
HLH is a disorder where the immune system gets into overdrive and starts to attack the body itself, which may lead to severe inflammation and multiple organ failure. This disease can be life-threatening and if not treated immediately, it is bound to result in death according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Peripheral T-cell lymphoma is an aggressive blood cancer affecting the immune system’s T cells and in most cases, the patient develops HLH. Therefore, both diagnosis and treatment are complex. It was possible to determine that Bret’s T-cell cancer cells did not carry the CD30 protein marker — a characteristic which rendered common targeted therapies, like Brentuximab Vedotin, less effective choices in his case.
Bret Hanna-Shuford Shared Candid Health Updates During Months-Long Hospitalization
During the time that Bret Hanna-Shuford was ill, he and his husband, Stephen, updated their fans about his health and treatment on the couple’s “Broadway Husbands” social media pages.
Bret’s condition was severe, and he was in hospital for several months, during which he had to celebrate both Thanksgiving and Christmas in hospital.
In one of the updates in October, he revealed that he had been in an ICU coma for three days. He also expressed how badly he wanted to go home. “I want to go home,” he said. “I’m missing my son very much, and my husband too… But I’m sending you so much love because your love to me has been amazing.”

Fundraiser Raised Significant Funds for Bret Hanna-Shuford
During the several-months period of treatment that Bret Hanna-Shuford went through, family, friends and people from the theater world rallied to financially support his family.
A GoFundMe was set up in August to raise funds for increasing medical bills and the loss of income when Bret and his husband, Stephen, had to stop working during his care. Along with many recognizable Broadway personalities, John Tartaglia, Douglas Sills and Thomas Schumacher, the former president and producer of Disney Theatrical Group, also contributed.
Scott Barnhardt, the organizer and a close friend who has known Bret since 1999 when they both were students at Wagner College, wrote in the fundraiser description that it was weeks of “uncertainty, misdiagnoses and countless medical visits” before they finally had the doctors’ correct understanding of Bret’s illness. The campaign also mentioned that the couple had just relocated to a new house in Orlando, which turned what should have been a season of new beginnings into “a sudden fight for health and stability.”
