Vera Ellen Wang was born in New York City on June 27, 1949. Her parents were Chinese and had come to the United States in the middle of the 1940s. In addition to being a graduate of Yanjing University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, her mother, Florence Wu (Wu Chifang), worked as a translator for the United Nations. Her father, Cheng Ching Wang (Wang Chengqing), was the owner of a medicine company and held the following positions: Director of Singapore Petroleum Company Pte. Ltd., Chairman and President of Oceanic Petroleum Corporation, Chairman and President of Oceanic Petroleum (Asia) Corporation, Chairman and President of Summit Group of Companies, and Chairman of the Vera Wang Group from 1990 to 1998. Kenneth is the only brother that Wang has.

Figure skating was Wang’s first sport when she was eight years old. She started her training with Peter Dunfield and Sonya Klopfer in Denver during the summers, and she continued her training with the Skating Club of New York throughout the spring and fall seasons. She skated in the 1968 United States Figure Skating Championships and practiced with pairs partner James Stuart while she was still in high school before going on to compete. Following her lack of selection for the United States Olympic squad, she pursued a career in the fashion business. Wang received his education at Friends Seminary, graduated from Chapin School in 1967, went to the University of Paris, and received a degree in art history from Sarah Lawrence College.

Wang tied the knot with Arthur Becker, an investor, in June in the year 1989. In New York, they brought up their two adopted daughters, Cecilia Sloane and Josephine Heloise, who were also both adopted by them. In July 2012, the couple said that they were going their own ways.

She used a similar approach with her wedding designs, collaborating with David’s Bridal in 2011 to introduce “White by Vera Wang,” which provides bridal and bridesmaid dresses starting at $600. She also collaborated with Men’s Wearhouse to produce two tuxedo versions.
