Gilbert Arenas Celebrates Leaving Jail After Pleading Not Guilty To Illegal Gambling Charges

Arenas Arrested in Gambling Case

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas was taken into custody by authorities yesterday, July 30th, specifically in connection with a suspected illegal gambling operation. Furthermore, he was not alone; federal officials arrested five other men alongside him based on a federal indictment. Among other things, the indictment specifies that six individuals were operating a gambling business illegally. Besides, the authorities point out that the mentioned affair has been going on for a pretty long time, from September 2021 to July 2022, more or less. In this connection, the place where the business was carried out has been referred to as a big house located in Encino, California.

Gambling Operation Details

Among the group of six individuals facing charges is a man named Yevgeni “Giora” Gershman. Significantly, authorities have specifically identified Gershman as having alleged ties to organized crime groups operating within Israel. Furthermore, the indictment details how Gershman supposedly managed the hiring process for young women to work within this gambling environment. Specifically, these women were reportedly hired to perform services for the poker players present. Consequently, their duties allegedly included serving drinks, giving massages, and simply providing companionship during the games. Crucially, these women were compensated solely through tips received from the players. However, the indictment further alleges that the organizers implemented a system where they took a portion, described as a “tax,” directly out of the earnings these women received from their tips.

Court Appearance and Defense

Not long after his first arrest, Gilbert Arenas was taken to a judge in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. At this hearing, Arenas turned formally to the authorities’ charges by the federal government with which he contested. In particular, he released a negative verdict for each of the three different criminal counts mentioned in the indictment by stating that he was “not guilty”. The counts mentioned in the indictment are one count of conspiracy to commit an illegal gambling business, one distinct count of actually managing an unlicensed gambling business, and, lastly, one false statement made knowingly to federal investigators during their investigative turmoil.

By the way, after the hearing downtown, Jerome Friedberg, lawyer of Arenas, gave a short interview to the press. He went on to say, “At this point in the case, he is presumed innocent, right?” Friedberg then strongly asserted that his client deserves the exact same right to this presumption of innocence afforded to any other citizen under the law. He concluded firmly, insisting, “and that’s how he should be treated” by both the public and the justice system moving forward.

Limited Attorney Comments

Right after the court hearing, outside the courthouse, Jerome Friedberg, the lawyer of Gilbert Arenas, spoke to the press and made extra comments. Not only that, he communicated very clearly that he would be unable to disclose much about the case at the very beginning of it. Significantly, Friedberg gave a very good reason for his limited statement – he just hasn’t had enough time to talk through the complex situation with his client, Arenas, considering that the arrest and arraignment happened very quickly.

After his court hearing and not guilty plea, Gilbert Arenas was officially released from custody. Crucially, this release was granted by the court only after Arenas posted a bond set at fifty thousand dollars ($50,000). Additionally, the legal process is now moving forward, and based on the current court schedule, the actual trial where the evidence will be presented and Arenas will defend himself against the charges is tentatively planned to commence on September 23rd of this year.

Celebratory Social Media Post

It appears that the former professional basketball star is feeling extremely positive following his release from custody. Earlier today, specifically, Arenas actively used his account on the social media platform known as Twitter, or X, to share his current mood publicly. As a result, he uploaded a video that visually depicted him rejoicing his freedom back in a very clear way. Arenas is captured by DJ Akademiks, a media personality, going down a staircase with high energy and dancing his moves. In the background, he is heard repeating the words, “They can’t hold me,” which is a statement of both his relief and resistance to the oppressors.

Moreover, Arenas added a written caption to this video post stating simply, “Im Back on the Streets.” Immediately following this, he used the caption to strongly proclaim his belief in his own innocence regarding the gambling operation allegations. Specifically, he wrote: “This aint got shyt to do with me ‘ just rented the house’ Wasnt apart,” directly claiming his only connection to the property was as a renter and denying any participation in the alleged illegal activities.
