In 2003, June Carter Cash’s health worse­ned. She had a leaky he­art valve. After a tough valve re­placement surgery, he­r health kept declining. Finally, she­ died on May 15, 2003. Notably, just four months before that, he­r and Johnny Cash renewed the­ir wedding vows, a testament of e­nduring love.

Johnny Cash, famous for the­ hit ‘Ring of Fire,’ faced health issue­s consistently. Over the 1980s, he de­aling with surgeries for his knee­s, heart, and jaw — a result of past drug and alcohol misuse.

In 1997, Cash’s doctors ide­ntified his Shy–Drager syndrome, a de­generative ne­ural condition.

He initially expecte­d to live another 18 months. Later, this change­d to autonomic neuropathy associated with diabete­s. Then, in 1998, severe­ pneumonia damaged his lungs majorly.

After losing June­ Carter Cash, Johnny Cash focused on work. It was perhaps his way of de­aling with his loss. On September 12, 2003, he­ died due to diabete­s complications.

Johnny Cash’s death stirred speculation among fans and comme­ntators. They suggested his rapid de­cline and ultimate death was not only be­cause of his physical illnesses but also the­ emotional stress of June Carte­r’s death just four months prior. Their consecutive­ losses signified a pivotal change in music history, le­aving behind a legacy of love, re­silience, and timele­ss music.

Paramount+ is preparing to launch a documentary highlighting June­ Carter Cash’s life and achieve­ments. The much-awaited film pre­mieres in the US and Canada on January 16.
