She had her debut appearance on television as a model in the 1979 adaptation of Eischiled. After that, she went on to co-star in Flamingo Road, which aired from 1980 to 1981. Both in the premiere episode and as a recurrent character throughout the first season, Colbert made an appearance.

From that point on, she was able to get parts in several other television programs, including Capitol, Benson, The Fall Guy, Knots Landing, A Death in California, Sisters, and True Colors. In his statement to the publication, he said that the principal characters, as well as the program itself, treated her with respect and did not exhibit any signs of condescending. The television program Dallas included a large number of recurring supporting characters who contributed to the development of a feeling of community for a show that was set in a huge metropolis. Dora Mae was an integral element of the series.
