Olivia Rodrigo Responds to Babydoll Dress Dispute, Shares Why It Got Her ‘So Upset’

Olivia Rodrigo Addresses Comments on Babydoll Dress

Lately, Olivia Rodrigo has found herself tangled in talk over what she’s been wearing, those childlike dresses popping up during her album push. People have started pushing back hard on the styles lately. The little girl vibe of the outfits sparked debate out of nowhere. As promotion rolled along, so did chatter about fashion choices feeling off. Now, everyone seems stuck on why those particular looks showed up at all.
That singer, just 23, wore the dress while filming her “Drop Dead” clip, later that look showed up again when she played a show in Spain for Spotify.

Olivia Rodrigo Reacts to the Criticism of Her Babydoll Dress

During her talk to the Popcast, she highlighted the difference: showcasing in sparkly bras and thongs didn’t make anyone mad. Yet slipping into a dress labeled childish? That somehow crossed a line in others’ eyes. “I’ve stood under bright lights nearly exposed,” she said, “but covering up is what made people uncomfortable.”

Still, she sees this mindset as pointing to something deeper in our culture, girls grow up hearing that blame falls on them when attention turns sexual.
“It’s illustrating just how much we’re actually normalizing pedophilia in our culture,” said Rodrigo. “It’s this kind of talk that we girls are fed from such a young age. Don’t wear that because then a man is going to sexualize your body, and it’s your fault.”

Olivia Defends Babydoll Dress Style

Olivia Rodrigo says she did not really mean her babydoll dress to be a sexualized item, and the clothes were inspired by characters of female rock legends that she had seen, for example. “I really didn’t think that I looked sexy in that at all, ” Rodrigo explained. “I was like, this is so cool.” Maybe I resemble Kathleen Hanna, though some say Courtney Love comes to mind instead.

Wearing those clothes wasn’t only about feeling at ease—Rodrigo used the moment to challenge old ideas. She pushed back against the belief that women should dress a certain way to avoid a bad reaction. Protecting young females matters deeply to her, she explained. Her message?

In fact, recently, a secret project has led Rodrigo to the Big Apple. He showed up there just days ago, moving through the streets like someone avoiding attention.
