Matt Damon Reveals Wife Luciana’s Secret Brain Surgery Before Oscars
Matt Damon has shared how his wife of 20 years, Luciana, had to go through brain surgery.
Speaking to GQ magazine, the Odyssey actor Matt, 56, disclosed that Luciana, the wife of his four daughters, developed a brain aneurysm just one week before the 2024 Academy Awards in a 2024 interview.
According to Matt, their post-surgery recovery was marked on the night of the awards. Luciana was already feeling better; although they could not accompany her to the awards, they went instead to an after-party. Mainly, the idea was by Luciana that she was actually sorry not to be the Oscar last time The Departed won both Best Picture and other big categories.
Matt: “I remember I was directing The Bourne Ultimatum during those Olympics [where The Departed won], so that’s why I didn’t go.”

“Back then, I was a parent with an infant, living in sunny Miami. I remember, Lucy and I had a restless sleep due to watching the show and our nerves about Marty’s situation. After he won the trophy, I was so elated at first that I was just jumping for joy in our bedroom.
“We went to the Oscars, and, naturally, after the big wins, there was a lot of partying.
The next day, everyone, including cast members, the producers, and studio staff, started to be really curious: ‘Where were you, bro?’
It was an experience that almost happened again with Oppenheimer, although, at first, the whole situation frightened me. It all went down when, after a week of brain surgery, my wife recovered her physical and mental condition from a brain aneurysm and, thus, became healthy enough that night to be on her feet and have lots of energy. She was just so happy and healthy and felt up, so she could come back, literally, the way she was before she was a patient. She surprised Matt, the husband, by preparing, together with Mrs, the whole party’s clothes and getting out to the after-party of the Academy Awards. They were just going out as a couple on such a special night. And he, obviously, was so impressed: “That was really an [expletive] act of courage by her, and very significant.”

However, he had also started making a buzz – people stopped and asked him for pictures and autographs. Then, the things got kind of aggressive, because some persons were already drinking and had a bad state of mind. So he came behind my bar and wanted to hang out back there and have a drink.
[The owner] said, ‘Well, I saw you and wanted to say hello’, so I gave him a job! I told him, ‘Look, if you’re going to be back there, you have to find something to do!’
He actually knew how to mix cocktails well because he had been a professional bartender in one movie. So he began mixing drinks at our bar. Everyone wanted to see him, so that night I got a lot of tips – the whole place is talking about him. It really turned out to be a nice night, and after 15 years of this, here we are!”
