The Star Trek actress, who is 86 years old, has worked with Hepburn to Culkin. Guess who she is?

Joanna Miles Spotted in Rare Outing at 86

Joanna Miles played the role of Spock’s stepmother, Perrin, in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Daily Mail has contacted Miles’ representative, who has not yet responded.

She was born in March 1940 in Nice, France, to parents who were both painters, American Jeanne Patterson Miles and Dutch Johannes Schiefer. When Joanna was two months old, Nazi Germany invaded France, and during the war, her mother’s US citizenship helped the family to leave France for America.

“We were a headline in the New York Times as the last Americans out of France,” she told Broadway World. “My father was European, and he was happy to get out.” Miles says she had her parents’ genes for the arts, but she notes that, although they both went on to have successful careers, I found my mother’s particularly terrifying. So I thought, ‘Acting it out would be a good way to deal with it!’”

Joanna Miles Studied Alongside Hollywood Icons

She debuted in the theater, performing in a stock company with Hoffman in “The Glass Menagerie” and television series “NYPD” and “All My Children.”

She found her niche in the role of the sensitively portrayed character Laura in the television adaptation of “The Glass Menagerie.” Ms. Hepburn’s own reading of the part was shown in 1973 when she was invited to audition for it.

Sam Waterston, who would go on to star in “Law & Order,” was cast as Laura’s brother Tom, and Ms. Hepburn played their mother Amanda, a bossy woman whose tight control over her children, though in different measures, is a source of frustration to both.
Ms. Miles was taken aback when she arrived for her audition, for she found herself being asked to prepare a scene with Amanda, but to play another scene as well.

She Won Two Emmys for Breakthrough Role

“So I said, “Yes, well, I’ll read with you,” and then she cast me on the spot. It was really nice working with her,” said Miles of the TV film shot in London.
“Katharine Hepburn is an exciting personality who surrounds herself with a demanding aura, so much so that she even rode her bicycle around London.
Williams, who scored his first Broadway hit with The Glass Menagerie in 1944, “couldn’t have been more delighted.” So said Miles.
An Emmy vote cast two statues for Miles in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category and the Super Emmy for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama category.

Joanna Miles Found New Fans Through Star Trek

Tim Roth and Gary Oldman played the lead characters, and she played Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Dreyfuss was also one of the actors.

At the same time, her role was a minor one in Judge Dredd, a comic book film, which, after some time, was recognized as a fiasco at the box office. She appeared alongside Sylvester Stallone, who took the lead role of a judge in a dystopian society, where a system of law enforcement dominated the citizens through judges who had the ultimate power of life and death. Miles’ role as Judge Hilda Margaret McGruder, one of Dredd’s colleagues, in “Judge Dredd” was her first television series in the 1990s. She played the second wife of Mark Lenard, who played Sarek, the father of Leonard Nimoy’s Spock in the original “Star Trek” series and his new wife Perrin in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
“Star Trek was an unbelievable opportunity for me,” said Miles in the recent interview. “I still get invited to Star Trek conventions and get asked to sign things.” She remembered that the sets were something special. “I got to take my kids to see it, and they got to open the doors and move around the set. It was great!”

Joanna Continued Acting Well Into Her 70s

In 2001, she had a minor role as the wife of a shopkeeper in the television western series Crossfire Trail, filmed with Tom Selleck, Wilford Brimley, and Virginia Madsen, sister of the late Reservoir Dogs actor Michael Madsen.
Miles’ most recent theatrical film appearance was also in 2007, the comedy Sex and Breakfast, starring Home Alone series star Macaulay Culkin, who was by then already appearing in his thirties.
It was a film about two couples who turn to swinging to rekindle their loveless relationships, with the help of a therapist, played by Miles, who gives them this idea.
