The Mandalorian season 3: release date, cast, plot, and more
After its emotional ending at the end of 2020, The Mandalorian is back with its third season. Filled with jaw-dropping cameos, thrilling set pieces, and emotional storytelling that had us hooked from its very first frame, The Mandalorian is without a doubt one of the most absorbing Star Wars projects of the past decade and proved that Star Wars TV was more than possible. It’s been a while since we saw our favorite Mandalorian and Jedi youngling. Those who haven’t kept up with the other shows in The Mandalorian storyline may be a little confused about how the two reunited after an emotional ending in the show’s second season. Well, for those who are confused about this or unsure what to expect from the show, here’s everything you need to know about The Mandalorian season 3.
Mando and Grogu
As previously mentioned, those who don’t follow the other Disney plus shows may be a little confused about how the badass Mandalorian with a heart full of gold reunited with his adorable little green best friend. If you cast your mind back to the end of season two, you may remember that Luke Skywalker made a phenomenal appearance, slicing through Dark Troopers to take Grogu and help him harness his force abilities. There was not a dry eye in the world when watching this heartbreaking ending as the two went their separate ways.
Since then, however, the mostly disappointing Disney plus series, The Book of Boba Fett, gave us more Mandalorian goodness that finally reunited Din Djarin and Grogu. Towards the end of The Book of Boba Fett, we see Grogu training with Luke Skywalker, but upon Din Djarin’s arrival to visit his surrogate son, Din Djarin was not allowed to see him based upon the Jedi Order’s strict distaste for personal attachment. After Din Djarin handed Luke a tiny beskar armor for his little green friend, Luke gave Grogu a choice. Asking Grogu to choose between a lightsaber and the Beskar armor that Din Djarin gifted him. Thankfully, Grogu chose the Beskar Armor allowing the father and son duo to reunite at the end of The Book of The Boba Fett.
Plot
Based on the trailers, we can expect Din Djarin to travel to the ravaged remains of Mandalore along with his adorable companion. Upon his arrival to the Mandalorian’s home planet, Mando must then bathe in the living waters beneath the mines to be allowed to rejoin the Children of the Watch. If you remember, Din Djarin was stripped of his Mandalorian clan for breaking one of their most traditional rules and never removing their helmet. Likewise, after defeating Moff Gideon, Din Djarin inherited the Dark Saber, a unique Lightsaber that grants the wielder power over Mandalore, something which Bo Katan, the previous ruler of Mandalore wished to gain. Due to this, the trailers suggest Bo Katan and Mando will be butting heads in Mandalore’s Sundari Royal Palace.
Characters
Other than Din Djarin and Grogu, The Mandalorian season three trailer also features fan-favorite characters like Babu Frik, Bo Katan, and Kowakian monkey-lizards, very similar to Salacious B. Crumb, as well as special looks at Amy Sedaris’ Peli Motto and Carl Weathers’ Greef Karga. We can also expect X-wing pilot Captain Carson Teva and Dr. Pershing to reappear in the highly anticipated third season, who could be connected to Imperial Cloning Operations, and perhaps finally give us answers as to how “Somehow, Palpatine returned.” Back to The Future’s Christopher Lloyd is also set to make an anticipated appearance, in an episode on season three, along with Schooled’s Tim Meadows.
Order 66 and Grogu’s Past
Grogu’s past has been a lingering mystery throughout the entire course of the show, and based off snippets in the trailer, we can expect, and at the very least hope, that all our questions will be answered. Season two revealed that Grogu was in the Jedi temple during the dreaded Order 66, but how did he survive? Well, someone would have had to have saved him. But who? We have theorized for years and still have no concrete evidence as to who it would have been. Mace Windu is at the top of everyone’s guesses, and we can’t wait until season three finally unravels a little more about Grogu’s past.
Release Date and Episode Count
The Mandalorian season three is set to premiere on March 1st on Disney Plus and will feature a total of eight episodes. Bryce Dallas Howard, Carl Weathers, and Rick Famuyiwa are all set to return to the director’s chair in a few episodes of season three, along with some newcomers to the show like Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse), Rachel Morrison (Black Panther) and Lee Isaac Chung (Minari). Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian’s showrunner, wrote all eight seasons, along with Noah Kloor (The Book of Boba Fett) and Dave Filoni jumping in to help write episodes four and seven.
