Greatest Survivor Series Matches: The 2002 SmackDown Six Tag Team Championship

Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle vs Los Guerreros vs Edge & Rey Mysterio

Best Survivor Series Matches (2002)

The 2002 Survivor Series Tag Team Championship match was a non-stop action-packed feud between six of the most exciting WWE superstars at the time. The Rabid Wolverine Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle entered as tag champs and had to defend their title against Los Guerreros and the tag team of Rey Mysterio Jr and Edge.

A triple threat tag match isn’t easy to choreograph but all six men delivered a minute by minute spectacle of high-flying-balls-to-the-wall action. Eddie Guerrero’s sunset flip which transitioned into Chris Benoit performing one of three straight German suplexes on Edge is a thing of beauty. It was just one of many sensational wrestling moves the six men pulled off in twenty minutes and maybe the best moment of the entire event.

This match had everything a fan could want. Eddie hit his famous frog splash; Edge delivered his devastating spear multiple times; Rey pulled a hurricanrana and hit the 619; while Kurt Angle put just about everyone in an ankle lock. In the end, Los Guerreros walked away as victors with Eddie putting Mysterio in a submission move. While the team of Benoit and Angle didn’t last long after this, the storyline led to an outstanding Angle vs. Benoit match for the WWE Title at Royal Rumble 2003.

This tag-team classic is an under-appreciated gem and essential viewing for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the “SmackDown Six”.

Editor’s Note: This is part of an ongoing series. You can find all the entries here.
