Sordid Cinema Podcast #557: An Invitation To The Dance: The Exorcist III at 30

Do you dare walk these steps again?

The Exorcist III Podcast Review

The number ‘III’ added to movie titles in the 80s and 90s rarely meant good things, but William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist III is a huge exception. Based on his novel Legion (which was in turn based on his idea for an Exorcist movie sequel, the film has transcended its early cool reception and is slowly gaining esteem and appreciation for demonic creeps that many say rival (or even best) the original’s. This week, the Sordid Cinema Podcast pays tribute to this fantastic vision of an enthusiastic serial killer, a cynical detective, and diabolical revenge via possession.

Joining Ricky D and Patrick Murphy is longtime former Sordid Cinema host Simon Howell to discuss the film’s standout elements, including the excellent script (filled with possibly the all-time greatest exposition dumps), the brilliant staging (a long shot involving a nurse, a hallway, and the final appearance of some shears is just one example), and several performances that may represent career peaks for some of the cast.

We won’t dive too deep into comparisons with the original film, as The Exorcist III more than stands on its own two feet, even if an understanding of Father Karras’ ordeal does deepen the connection and overall dread. If you’ve ever been curious or dismissive of this underseen gem, have a listen and check out the film for yourself!
