According to reports by various sources, Jeremy O. Harris, the playwright who was nominated for a Tony Award and is also an actor in Emily in Paris, was detained in Japan on the basis of suspicion that he tried to smuggle ecstasy (MDMA) into the country.
After the customs officers at Okinawa allegedly found the drug in his bag, Harris, 36, has been in custody since Nov. 16, as per the statement of local officials. On Dec. 4, the Japanese customs officials submitted a criminal complaint against Harris to the regional prosecutor’s office for the initiation of a formal charge.
A Japanese customs representative said that Harris came to Okinawa for sightseeing after flying from the United Kingdom with a stopover in Taiwan.
As per the information, local police have not revealed whether he has confessed to the allegations, although, if convicted, Harris might be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison. A spokesperson for Harris has not given any reply to the request for ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌comment.

Jeremy O. Harris is particularly famous for his writing and production of the 2019 Broadway play Slave Play, a work that received 10 Tony nominations in 2020. Besides this, he wrote the screenplay for the 2020 film Zola as well as for the movies coming out this year The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick and Erupcja. Furthermore, he was a producer on the second season of HBO’s Euphoria.
As a performer, Harris is the actor who plays Grégory Elliot Duprée in the Netflix series Emily in Paris and also appeared as himself in two episodes of the 2021 Gossip Girl revival.
Jeremy O. Harris has also been Broadway Producer of productions such as Ain’t No Mo and The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌Window.

In the same month of July, Jeremy O. Harris presented his novel play Spirit of the People at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. Besides, the cast was loaded with talented friends like: Ato Blankson-Wood, Zachary Booth, James Cusati-Moyer, Emma Ramos, Brandon Flynn, Julian Sanchez, and Amandla Jahava.
