Jeremy O. Harris formally charged with drug smuggling in Japan
According to reports by various sources, Jeremy O. Harris, the playwright who was nominated for a Tony Award and is also an actor in Emily in Paris, was detained in Japan on the basis of suspicion that he tried to smuggle ecstasy (MDMA) into the country.
After the customs officers at Okinawa allegedly found the drug in his bag, Harris, 36, has been in custody since Nov. 16, as per the statement of local officials. On Dec. 4, the Japanese customs officials submitted a criminal complaint against Harris to the regional prosecutor’s office for the initiation of a formal charge.
A Japanese customs representative said that Harris came to Okinawa for sightseeing after flying from the United Kingdom with a stopover in Taiwan.
As per the information, local police have not revealed whether he has confessed to the allegations, although, if convicted, Harris might be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison. A spokesperson for Harris has not given any reply to the request for comment.
