Anthony Hopkins Reveals That His Wife Suggested He Might Be Autistic, but He Refers to the Diagnosis as “Complete Nonsense”

Anthony Hopkins says wife suggested he may have autism

87-year-old Oscar winner recalled Stella Arroyave telling her she suspected Asperger after noting his obsession with numbers, detail, and order.
During an interview with The Sunday Times, Anthony Hopkins mentioned that his wife, Stella Arroyave, once investigated his habits – “I am obsessed with numbers. I am obsessed with detail. I like everything to be in order. And I was memorizing,” he quoted – and suggested, “You must be Asperger’s.” The actor has mentioned that he is doubtful of labels and diagnostic trends and chooses not to be defined by them.

Anthony Hopkins turns down wife’s idea that he might be on the autism spectrum

The octogenarian admits that he is doubtful of labels; Asperger’s is now considered part of autism spectrum disorder
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Anthony Hopkins said that his wife, Stella Arroyave, once telling him that after she saw his fixation with numbers, order, and memorization, he must be Asperger’s, and that she left the house saying that she was surprised by her own comment. “I really didn’t understand what the hell she was talking about,” he exclaimed and also said, “I don’t even think it.” To be precise, Asperger’s is no longer a separate clinical entity and is now considered to be part of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) which is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs social skills, communication, and learning as well as causing changes in behavior, according to the medical professionals.

Anthony Hopkins: “I’m cynical — it’s all nonsense” about late‑life diagnoses

The 87‑year‑old actor denies diagnostic labels such as ADHD, OCD and Asperger’s to be a “fashion” of the modern times, he refers to them as “the human condition”
When a Sunday Times interviewer proposed that a late diagnosis might give a person a sense of relief, Anthony Hopkins answered that he is a skeptic of labels. “Well, I suppose I’m cynical because it’s all nonsense… ADHD, OCD, Asperger’s, blah, blah, blah. Oh God, it’s called living,” he said, not quite agreeing that the human being can be divided into small boxes with “warts and grime and craziness” and so on. Autism spectrum disorder is, in general, clinically recognized in early childhood; however, a diagnosis can also be made in adulthood.

Anthony Hopkins talks about his struggles with alcoholism and shares insights from his memoir before the release of We Did OK, Kid

The actor describes a blackout while he was drunk driving as the moment that made him seek help; he celebrated 49 years of sobriety this January
While promoting his memoir, We Did OK, Kid, Anthony Hopkins told the New York Times podcast The Interview (Oct. 25) that it was only one single terrifying incident that made him stop drinking. “I was drunk and driving my car here in California in a blackout, no clue where I was going, when I realized that I could have killed somebody — or myself, which I didn’t care about,” he remembered. “I came to my senses… and said to an ex-agent of mine at this Beverly Hills party, ‘I need help.’ Hopkins celebrated 49 years of sobriety in January and during a candid press run linked to the book, he has been very open about his past.
