A VHS Tape of Back to the Future Just Sold for $75,000

If you happen to be sitting on some VHS tapes, now might be the time to put them on eBay as a copy of Back to the Future just sold for 75k.

If you happen to be a collector or hoarder sitting on a pile of old VHS tapes, it might be time to assess their value. While the format has been obsolete since the early ’00s, it may be coming back in a big way after a copy of Back to the Future sold for a jarring $75,000 at a Texas auction.

If you don’t know what a VHS tape even is, you’re probably under 30, and I’m sorry about the future of the planet. Also, is Snapchat still a thing? You might have seen American Psycho, for example, and wondered what the crazed maniac was always returning. In any case, when movies first started coming home, VHS or “videotape” was the format that won out and served as the primary way folks watched movies at home until DVD popped up in the late ’90s.

Either way, with thousands of roadside dives and attics around North America teeming with VHS tapes, it could be worth your while to go through your stash of shame and see if there’s something valuable hiding in the pile. Just think of the possibilities!

It might turn out you’ve got the same pile of junk you thought you had but if by chance, you’ve got a rare oldie like this Back to the Future tape, it could be your ticket to the big time.
