Catherine O’Hara Career

O’Hara began her comedic career in 1974, as a cast member of The Second City in her birthplace of Toronto. She served as Gilda Radner’s understudy up to the time when Radner returned to her role on Saturday Night Live. For the following two years, this theatrical group came up with the sketch comedy program SCTV, for which O’Hara became a dedicated performer.

She began her career by doing voice-overs for a variety of cartoons in the late 1970s, a practice that would continue throughout her whole career. When Saturday Night Live was being retooled in 1981, she was recruited to replace Ann Risley even though SCTV was in between network agreements at the time. This occurred for a brief period of time in the early 1980s. In spite of this, she left the program without ever making an appearance on television, opting instead to return to SCTV once the show received a contract with NBC.

Beginning in the middle of the 1970s, O’Hara started her career on television, with the exception of SCTV. Her debut on television was in 1975 when she made her debut in a brief sketch part as a maid in a Wayne and Shuster special that was shown on CBC. Through the years that followed, she made appearances in several television specials, including Witch’s Night Out and Intergalactic Thanksgiving, as well as the children’s television series, Coming Up Rosie for a season (1976–1977) and the television feature The Rimshots, which was shown in 1976. However, it was her appearances on SCTV, which started broadcasting locally in Southern Ontario in the autumn of 1976, that established her as a well-known figure in Canada. In the course of its syndication, the program steadily gained a following on a national and finally a worldwide scale. During the 1980–1981 season, O’Hara was absent from SCTV for a period of time. However, she returned to the program just in time for it to be picked up by the NBC television network in the United States, at which point it was rebranded as SCTV Network 90. For her efforts as a writer on the program, O’Hara was recognized with an Emmy Award for outstanding writing and was also nominated for two further Emmy Awards. She departed SCTV once again before the show’s fifth season in 1982, although she reappeared for sporadic guest appearances up to the show’s conclusion in 1984.
