The Princess Bride Auditions Kicked Out Liam Neeson For One Specific Reason

Standing at an incredible height of six feet four inches, Liam Neeson has a very imposing figure, thus fitting his great acting talent without question. This unification of size and prowess has enabled him to forge an enormous and stellar career in the world of film. Notably, the far-reaching odyssey initially started in the latter part of the 1970s and incredibly has embraced a wide range of things, namely, critically acclaimed dramatic roles to major roles in popular genre fiction. Furthermore, he later executed a substantial and lengthy shift toward action-oriented parts much later in his professional life.

However, even Neeson’s notably towering and formidable appearance has not always guaranteed success or approval throughout his decades in the industry. Often, his nonverbal communication unexpectedly left key people unsatisfied, which incidentally turned into rather uneasy affairs. While this was all happening, Liam Neeson was hustling their 2025 film “The Naked Gun” together with her partner, Pamela Anderson, and was at the same time involved in an interview conducted by Entertainment Weekly. This was a very interesting intervention, as they verified quite a number of their profiles on IMDb and other web sources. Eventually, one particular assertion about Neeson’s past emerged prominently during their discussion.

The “Princess Bride” Audition Revelation

This particular rumor revolved around what was identified as the most humiliating occasion Neeson had while starring in movies. It focused on his failure to fetch the part in the highly esteemed movie “The Princess Bride” after he auditioned for it. According to the report, Rob Reiner, the director, was not happy at all and was apparently very let down by Neeson’s height now that he saw him in person. Naturally, this intense reaction was fundamentally tied to the very particular role Neeson was actively trying out for during that encounter.

Significantly, Neeson himself openly acknowledged that the circulating story about Reiner’s negative response was completely accurate during the interview. He elaborated clearly, confirming that Reiner had indeed expressed overt disgust upon seeing him arrive to audition for the pivotal role of Fezzik the giant. Neeson recounted the exact interaction verbatim: “It’s very true. And he turned to the casting director and said, ‘I asked for a giant. What height are you?’ ‘6 foot 4.’ ‘Come on!’ That was it. No ‘Hello, thanks for coming.’ Nothing like that.”

Ultimately, Neeson emphasized the profound secondhand embarrassment this abrupt dismissal created, particularly for the casting professional who had arranged the audition. He reflected sincerely, stating, “It was a little embarrassing for the casting agent. I felt bad for her. I really did.” This honest confession did not just demonstrate his personal discomfort with the situation but also the deep awareness, compassion, and understanding for their colleague’s embarrassing situation that Reiner’s straightforwardness had put through.

Reiner’s Specific Height Requirement

In this particular situation, it becomes quite understandable why director Rob Reiner reacted negatively upon seeing Liam Neeson’s physical stature. Fundamentally, the role Neeson was attempting to secure required someone of truly extraordinary size. To elaborate, anyone familiar with the finished film – and indeed, it’s practically impossible to imagine anyone not having experienced “The Princess Bride” – immediately recognizes that the character of Fezzik ultimately went to the professional wrestler André the Giant. Consequently, this casting decision provides the essential context for Reiner’s blunt dismissal during Neeson’s audition.

André the Giant possessed a genuinely massive frame that perfectly matched the director’s vision for Fezzik. Officially listed at a towering seven feet and four inches tall during production, though likely slightly shorter in reality, André embodied a truly larger-than-life persona. Furthermore, his unusual physique was an extremely important element of the film’s success, giving the character Fezzik a lot of vitality. It is also worth noting that André created some of the film’s most memorable moments behind the scenes, one of which was a problem with his co-star, Cary Elwes and André’s vehicle during the filming process, becoming a major highlight.

Neeson’s Career Timing Relative to the Film

At the same time, it’s worth finding out when “The Princess Bride” got off the ground in regard to Neeson’s career. Luckily for André Roussimoff, the film debut was taking place already in 1987. At that point in time, Neeson was on his way to his worldwide fame years. In 1993, his renowned part in “Schindler’s List” as Oskar Schindler would be the one to made him popular. Thus, before filming “The Princess Bride,” André didn’t stand a chance to be considered a candidate for the very influential and worldwide known star Liam Neeson.

This situation stood in clear contrast to the experience of another actor within the same film, Wallace Shawn. Shawn, who brilliantly portrayed the cunning Vizzini, reportedly felt intense pressure throughout filming. This anxiety stemmed directly from knowing that the beloved actor Danny DeVito had originally been strongly considered for his role. Shawn felt he was constantly performing in the shadow of DeVito’s potential interpretation.

Ultimately, however, despite these vastly different circumstances for André and Shawn – one securing an iconic role without competing against a star, the other burdened by comparisons – both delivered key performances. Furthermore, they contributed significantly to an overall fantastic ensemble cast featuring uniformly exceptional performances with no discernible weak links. As for Liam Neeson himself, although missing out on Fezzik was surely disappointing at the time, his subsequent career trajectory demonstrates that things ultimately unfolded quite remarkably well for him.
