Michael J.Fox and wife, Tracy Pollan’s love affair that was very Hollywood—and a perfect rom-com if the beginning of their relationship ever made it to the silver screen.
Beyond that, however, their initially perfect love quickly became marred as the illness struck him—the disease that would eventually change his life, i.e., Parkinson’s.
The couple, who played the leads in the sitcom “Family Ties,” got to know each other personally when the show was on, but the initial meeting was not that promising; Michael J. Fox even joked about her breath and insulted her wife too.
Two years passed before Michael J.Fox and Tracy met each other again in the movie Bright Lights, Big City. There, Tracy had the chance to learn about Michael a bit more, and their relationship blossomed soon afterwards. Mere months after saying “I do,” the couple had a small church service in Vermont to get married. Then a little baby came with them, which was the following year.
However, life did not go on peacefully for this couple but was turned upside down when they were told Michael was suffering from Parkinson’s—a neurological degenerative disease affecting movement, balance, and various body functions.

Michael was just 29, at the peak of his acting career, when he was diagnosed, yet he decided to keep the secret to himself. Tracy, who was 30 at the time, became his main caretaker and someone he could trust with his life. Tracy, 66, has been by Michael J. Fox, 65, and his children’s side throughout, and the Back To The Future actor even gave a shout-out to her during the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, an award he received at Monday’s Primetime Emmys.
After addressing how he learned about Parkinson’s disease and the fact that he preferred to hide it for a while, Michael said, ‘And here is the part when I thank both Tracy and our kids for their sacrifices, patience, and love. The whole world cannot imagine it.’ Hollywood has seldom seen couples as devoted to each other as Michael and Tracy. Despite Michael’s long-standing health issues, the two went on to make history by getting married and having children.
The Back To The Future actor has previously stated that, while getting together with her didn’t come to the fore to him at that point, he got a really serious crush on her, which only he would admit to; he loved the fact that she didn’t allow him to get away with stuff.

Although both Tracy and Michael J. Fox were in love affairs at that time, it was only when the couple decided to go to New York City together for the filming of their movie, Bright Lights, Big City, that the relationship between them got started.
‘We would hang out together on the set,’ said Michael in his documentary. ‘She was able to get a close-up view of the storm my life was becoming. She had empathy towards what I was going through.

The lovebirds chose a very special intimacy in their wedding, as they were surrounded by merely 50 people. They did not let their love be overshadowed by the attention from outsiders, and they went the extra mile to hide their wedding.
In the years that followed, the couple’s family welcomed four children, the first being their son Sam, followed by twin daughters Aquinnah Kathleen and Schuyler Frances, and a fourth daughter, Esmé Annabelle, which led Tracy to reduce her acting career in order to focus on family life.
Their lives turned upside down with Michael’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s. Despite this, Trish was very strong; however, this didn’t stop her from facing all her difficulties.
Michael recalled his first diagnosis in an interview and said, “We had no idea what we were in for at the time.”
“The thing that I’ll always love about Tracy is that she wasn’t scared at that moment,” Michael added.
A CBS special aired Michael, who recounted, “In sickness and health, come what may, she vowed to marry me; she stuck with me. ‘Michael, whenever it’s convenient for you to say, “I think I am going to run out,” it would have been perfectly legitimate, but she did not do that.’

“I love Tracy, obviously, and she’s an amazing person and has gone through a lot.”
“I realize she has to have a life separate from me, from Parkinson’s disease, from me being Alex Keaton or Marty McFly; she is also a person. While on the subject of the longevity of their wedding, she explains her side by saying, “Tracing back, I think one of our secret ingredients lies in the fact that we really take time to listen to each other, and we support each other without fail when the need arises.”
“Of course, even though we take time to be apart just when the circumstances demand it, it’s a simple matter of responding to each moment’s needs and trying to be supportive.”
Michael J.Fox Emmy Night: Award, Family, and a Parkinson’s Storyline
Michael J.Fox and Tracy were still very much in love 30 years after their marriage as they attended the Primetime Emmys on Monday. Their four children — Sam, 37, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 31, and Esme, 24 — joined them on the red carpet as Michael received the distinguished Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.The award, which launched in 2002, recognizes a telecommunications industry figure whose philanthropy reflects Bob Hope’s decades of charitable work and community service. Michael received the honor for his groundbreaking Parkinson’s disease research and advocacy efforts.
In addition to being on the short list for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at Shrinking, he is getting his 19th Emmy nomination this year, which has become his comeback to the stage after he retired in 2020. The character he plays in the show is named Gerry, which was his first character in a decade after retiring from acting. His character befriends Dr. Paul Rhoades, being played by Harrison Ford, who is also learning to deal with a Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Michael had to be content with Rob Reiner receiving the award for his performance in The Bear, Rob Reiner having been in a posthumous tribute.
Standing Ovation for Michael : ‘I Kept My Diagnosis a Secret’
Michael was given a standing ovation when he stepped on stage in a wheelchair for the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
The heartfelt actor stated, ‘Thank you very much to everyone at the Television Academy. First let me say a few things about Bob Hope. My father and mother were both born at the time of the Great Depression.
‘To my parents, Bob was not just a performer. He was a soldier’s advocate and selfless helper for decades, and he supported many military families similar to ours.
‘In place of holiday seasons with the family that he could have been celebrating, he kept showing up for the troops in Berlin, Saigon, etc., bringing along a turkey leg and a golf club, and maybe if you’re lucky, he might be accompanied by Lola Falana—he was the living embodiment of all that I believed in after a few years had passed.’
Michael then told how he had been given valuable lessons by Hope, which turned out to be very helpful for him when he found out that he had the devastating condition. He said, ‘Until my late 20s, the lessons that Hope taught me had no place in my personal life. It was after that when my life gave me a role I wasn’t looking for that I understood how those lessons affected my life.’
‘At first I decided not to tell about my Parkinson’s condition. I was really terrified that people at work and also the public who come to watch my shows would judge or relate negatively.’
Michael J. Fox Breaks Down: ‘I’m Proud of the Progress We’ve Made’
Michael sadly said that the only thing that was worrying him was the fans laughing if they knew that he was very sick. However, Michael also confessed that his worldwide fans gave him reasons to carry on. “Your support was so surprising and uplifting to me, and I hadn’t lost my reason.” They couldn’t take it away from me,” Michael emphasized. And it was you who stood up for me. Thank you.”
Michael J.Fox came to realize that accepting Parkinsons didn’t mean he was giving up. It meant that the only thing left was to fight the disease as best as he could. If he has to fight for all the people with this condition, he has got to make sure it’s as good as possible.
Michael explained to people of the United Parkinson’s Association (UPA) in America about his campaign.
“For the illness and how they would spend the money they raised.”
Michael apologized for the interruption he made with his speech when he couldn’t see clearly and
admitted he had found the right professionals to carry out the job he had committed to do—world-class research.
‘We are very proud of the advancements we’ve accomplished in the field that will help millions of patients and their families affected by Parkinson’s. ‘ We are getting closer and closer to eliminating this disease completely. Michael also thanked the staff, donors, researchers, and the patients for their work and efforts that the foundation has received from them.
