Sheila Mathews Dies at 99 After Decades in British Entertainment

Sheila Mathews Dies at 99 After Celebrated ITV Career

ITV icon Sheila Mathews passed away at the age of 99 following a long career in entertainment; the news has been officially confirmed. TV personality and stage actress Sheila Mathews, regarded as one of the earliest stars of commercial television in the UK, was a star of the entertainment scene.

At the time ITV was first launched, she joined on the launch day, and then the next evening she hosted Friday’s Girl, which showcased the singer that Sheila was. As a tribute to ‘Britain’s longest-serving performer,’ the actress’s passing was announced in Intermission magazine this week. Sheila Mathews, who was cast when she was only three and was a musical-comedy and variety performer, was a singer before turning to television.

Charles Reading, Sheila’s husband, the late director, who died in 1999, is remembered in this news. They had no grandchildren, but she will leave the two daughters she was proud of, Sally and Jane.

Sheila Mathews’ Remarkable Early TV Career

After her husband’s funeral, an obituary said that she was the first pop star to get the TV ratings at number one, with Friday’s Grid drawing a whopping 12 million viewers.

Following her singing career, Sheila also did presenting work. A book on the early history of programs for television advertisements shows that Sheila was one of the presenters of the 5-year-running show On View from 1957 to 1962. Later she became a host for In My View. Sheila’s first West End theater role was at sixteen in 1943’s Strike A New Note, where her dancing partner was the very young Eric Morecambe.

Other Palladium performances that came after that were Happy and Glorious with Tommy Trinder and Out of This World with Frankie Howerd. Sheila had been working at Associated-Rediffusion TV with Charles when they met. Charles was a big name in British post-war entertainment as an actor, play designer, director, and producer. He was a friend of Val Parnell, who used to be an impresario. In 1957, Sheila Charles tied the knot and had two daughters.

Sheila’s Career Spanned Decades of British Entertainment

In “Glamorous Nights” at “Drury Lane,” Charles played a producer, and his wife was one of the leading ladies; they had recently become married, so she wasn’t only the main lady at the show but also Charles’ new wife at the time.

After Charles’s proposal, her future plans with her previous boyfriend, magician Peter Waring, who was also an entertainer, to marry changed when he decided not to follow through. Right‍‌‍‍‌ from the start, she was quite popular and kept being active in the theater and on TV for a bunch of years. Besides, some of her last appearances on television were in Crossroads, Emmerdale, Shelley, Minder, and The Good Old Days ‍‌‍‍‌shows.
