Valentines Day, a holiday filled with love, chocolate, and flowers. A holiday to celebrate the one you love, in profound and cliched fashion. But for those who sadly haven’t had much luck with cupid, Valentine’s Day kind of sucks right? Well, that’s why the ever growing annual holiday Galentine’s Day is incredibly beloved. Created by Pawnee’s greatest council woman in the hit TV show Parks and Recreation, Galentine’s Day quickly became a real holiday mostly celebrated by women who come together to celebrate their friends. 

There are many brilliant ways to spend Galentine’s Day, but who doesn’t love a good movie night? or better yet a movie marathon. Well, if so, we have compiled a list of the best movies on Galentine’s Day, which celebrate female friendship and women empowerment.

10. The Other Woman (2014)

What better form of empowerment and revenge, than teaming up with the women your husband cheated on you with, and taking him down. The Other Woman gleefully bathes in the inner rage that most women, or anyone for that matter feel when thinking about cheating men or women. But apart from delving into that rage, The Other Woman is an uproarious comedy, sporting a great cast that at the end of the day tells a compelling story about female friendship.

For all the mom’s out there, Bad Moms is a highly entertaining and hilarious flick for you to enjoy without the kids. Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Bell team up to deliver uproarious humor as three very different types of moms let their hair down and live the life they want, not the one they are forced to live. A brilliant representation of how countless moms out there wish they could live their lives.

Booksmart is one of the most surprising gems of the past decade, and is a Galentine’s Day must watch. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut see’s two highschool best friends who have spent four years dedicated to their education, in order to attend an Ivy League school. However, upon their graduation, they both quickly realize that they have missed out on all the fun high school has to offer. Booksmart manages to bond these already best friends even more as the two girls go on a hilarious, charming and wild adventure.

Interweaving the story of four different women together who are all at different phases of their love lives, How To Be Single is a must watch every Galentine’s Day. Showcasing the power of female friendship, How To Be Single is simply hilarious, with gut busting humor and infectious chemistry from all of its stars. Rebel Wilson is at her best, and the likes of Dakota Johnson, Allison Brie and Leslie Mann are all dynamite on screen together.

6. Baby Mama (2008)

There are no better gal pals than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, making a Galentine’s Day movie recommendation list meaningless without them. If there is any reason to watch this film, it’s for Poehler’s and Fey’s hilarious chemistry. However, Baby Mama also tells an empowering story about a single woman who hires a surrogate mother to bear her child. A brilliant Galentine’s Day watch.

5. Someone Great (2019)

Someone Great is by far one of the most underrated movies that celebrates friendship and certainly deserves a watch this Galentine’s Day. Written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Someone Great is a heartfelt, emotional and realistic outlook on platonic and romantic relationships. 

The film follows Jenny (Gina Rodriquez) who recently broke up with her longtime boyfriend who she thought was the one. Looking for a fresh start, Jenny accepts a new job which requires her to move across the country. Not ready to say goodbye, Jenny’s two best friend’s celebrate one final night together before she has to leave.

What Galentine’s Day list would be complete with one of the most feminist movies of all time, Legally Blonde making a well deserved appearance? As Reese Witherspoon’s best performance, Legally Blonde is as delightful as it is empowering. Showcasing a woman’s determination to win back the man she thought was the one through extreme measures, only to find out that he wasn’t the one for her. Legally Blonde is also a brilliant representation of what women are truly capable of, as Elle Woods inspiringly gains a Law degree.

The hit 2011 comedy Bridesmaids has been labeled as one of the best comedies of the past decade, leaving audiences in stitches no matter how many times they’ve watched it. As well as being undeniably hilarious, Bridesmaids tells a compelling story about friendship, jealousy and of course being a bridesmaid. Bridesmaids is universally loved by all and a perfect addition to your Galentine’s Day movie marathon.

The film is full of charm and plenty of heart celebrating sisterhood as well as the ups and downs of womanhood. Little Women is a deeply feminist movie that requires a viewing every year.

The ultimate Galentine’s Day flick, comes in the form of Girl’s Trip, a hilarious romp stacked with a great cast. Girl’s Trip is a lot of fun, and a perfect film to watch with all your friends. The film stars the likes of Tiffany Hadish, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith, who simply let loose and have a ton of fun on screen, enhancing the experience for audiences. Importantly, the movie is all about reconnecting with old friends and having the time of your life, as well as sexually empowering women everywhere.
