How the Beckhams Rebuilt Their Marriage Through Change
Victoria in her new Netflix documentary admits that going their separate ways has been the main reason for their togetherness.
David and Victoria Beckham are no longer what they were when they met in 1997 – and Victoria maintains that the latter is part of the relationship that is keeping them together. “A lot of times in relationships, one partner will tell the other, ‘You have changed.’ Well, of course, you have changed!” she told ELLE, implying that we become different people between 20 and 50 years of age. In the new Netflix documentary Victoria Beckham, which will be released on Oct. 9, she retraces that path – and the couple sharing a glass of wine at home before a reception with King Charles III among other instances, indicate that their relationship is getting stronger.

From knighthood to old scandals, the Beckhams weathered it all
Celebrities and controversies — David’s knighthood and an affair in the past shook the couple’s relationship but they stayed strong.
The Beckhams have a dark past in the middle of which a false story of an affair was one of the main reasons for the crisis. It was about 20 years ago that they went through this turbulent chapter when Rebecca Loos, a former member of his management team, alleged an affair. On the other hand, David denied the claim and Loos keeps on saying what really happened. What is more, he confesses that he and Victoria are still a mystery to him how they were able to survive such a hard time.
How the Beckhams Stayed Together After Scandal
David Beckham said that he couldn’t understand how they got through the aftermath but they did. In the 2023 docuseries Beckham he referred to Victoria as “everything” and told that witnessing her suffering was “very hard”. Both agree that it was their lowest point – Victoria even admitted that they were “against each other”. Rather than breaking up, they decided to work for their marriage and family.
The couple who tied the knot on July 4, 1999, just a few months after the birth of Brooklyn and the same year David achieved the treble at Manchester United, went on to raise four children: Brooklyn (26), Romeo (23), Cruz (20) and Harper (14). Among the ups and downs of their careers, paparazzi pressure and family dramas, the Beckhams have chosen to be there for each other and put their family first.
From pop stardom to family and football fame
During the time David’s career was taking off, Victoria made a career shift from music to fashion and motherhood, which led to a year full of upheaval for the couple.
In October 2001, Victoria contributed to a collaborative single, “Out of Your Mind,” and also came out with a solo album of the same name that sold about 50,000 copies. She didn’t continue her singing career, but instead she focused on fashion and family. On the 1st of September, 2002, she gave birth to Romeo. David, on the other hand, was becoming more and more famous — it was even decided to name a movie after him, and he signed with Real Madrid in summer 2003 for almost $30 million. All these changes that took place in a short period gave rise to the hardest year of their marriage.

Tabloid scandal and the couple’s response
Reports of an alleged affair surfaced in 2004 amid denials and public unity at royal honors.
September 2003 saw David in the company of a woman later identified as Rebecca, an assistant at his management firm, and therefore sightings that led to a frenzy of scandal on the simplicities in the British tabloids which David promptly denied. In the next month, David and Victoria were a team as he received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II. Nevertheless, in April 2004 the News of the World (closed down now) ran a series of allegations — a supposed “intimate family friend” — as the source of narratives of sexual happenings and provocative email exchanges between David and Rebecca after that evening in Madrid. Those stories further mentioned that Victoria was the one who phoned Rebecca to get her to stop.
Cheating allegations explode, David breaks silence
As tabloids popularized affair rumors, David sent out an unequivocal repudiation, affirming his joyful marriage.
Shortly before the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary, British tabloids were full of increasingly explosive cheating allegations. Rebecca’s sibling not only added fuel to the fire; he also maintained that his sister had “confirmed” a brief ding with the footballer in Spain. Victoria’s trip to Switzerland was portrayed by her staff as a well-deserved holiday, not as her getting away from the scandal, but the affair continued to dominate the headlines. Finally, David broke his silence, saying, “Throughout the past few months I have become accustomed to reading more and more ridiculous stories about my private life… The one thing that is true is that I am very happy with my wife. I have a great wife and two very nice kids. No third party can alter these facts.”
Rebecca raises her voice; Beckhams take legal action
Rebecca says she didn’t expect Victoria to be pregnant again and the Beckhams to sue her – Sympathy was not in her mind
A very heated conversation was held in April 2004 on Sky One with Kay Burley, where Rebecca admitted that she was not expecting any sympathy from Victoria and in fact, she wanted the couple to “get through it,” as well as mentioning that she had never planned to break up their family.
In spite of the scandal, Victoria was already quite far along with the pregnancy in August 2004, and in September, she and David took the News of the World to court because of a story with the headline “Posh and Becks on the Rocks,” alleging that the two had broken up.”

Beckhams sue tabloids while defending their growing family
“The constant and endless exploitation of our family for someone else to make a quick buck is something that we have had more than enough of,” the couple stated, describing the rumors as “completely false,” giving the problem into the hands of their attorneys and thus, getting ready to greet their third son. Cruz was born Feb 20, 2005, in Madrid.
After that, the Beckhams went on to file a lawsuit against the News of the World article based on the accusations of a former nanny, also notifying the caregiver of unconsented disclosure by their complaint.
Beckhams on trust, family and a legal win
As the couple went through the court case, David stood up for their privacy and the marriage, which they later resolved through a court settlement.
“Asking someone into your house to take care of your children – your most valuable possessions – means you have to trust them,” David said in April 2005, referring to the legal constraints but stating that he and Victoria were “really happy” and “I think I love my wife.” In response, the pair issued a statement saying the matter had been amicably resolved with News of the World in March 2006. Consequently, they withdrew their legal action; six years later, the tabloid was closed due to the uncovering of the phone-hacking scandal by its employees.
Rebecca confirms her version of events as the Beckhams fly to the US
She maintained her story in 2025 and David referred to the move as “very hard.”
On 60 Minutes Australia in March 2025, Rebecca declared, “I have been true to my word, I have never exaggerated, I have never lied about a single thing. Why? Because I’m facing the most influential, the most powerful media couple. And the only thing I had going for me was the truth.”
As a result, the Beckhams took up David’s calculated offer from the Los Angeles Galaxy — a transfer valued at around $250 million, according to reports — and moved to America. In a January 2007 interview, David called the decision to take the family away “very hard,” which came after he guided Real Madrid to the Spanish league championship in his last season with the club.

NBC Series Chronicles the Beckhams’ Move to America
Victoria tells that they anticipated going unnoticed in the L.A. media frenzy.
The family’s relocation to Beverly Hills was the subject of NBC’s six‑episode Victoria Beckham: Coming to America serial. “We were pretty shocked that anyone even had a clue who we were, or that we were coming,” Victoria confided to E! News in the following August — while the stars were already shining in Hollywood. As she explained, the duality was gone, “David and Victoria from London” were their new identities, and so they gave the tabloids a fair warning to find out that they’re “actually quite boring”: “We really don’t do a lot of that. Just being with the kids at home in our little world is what we do.”
The Beckhams’ California Villa: Big on Family, Low on Flash
A 13,000‑square‑foot home chosen for comfort, not showmanship
As Victoria said to W, the 13,000‑square‑foot Southern California family villa, which is believed to have been bought for around $22 million, was their first choice because “they did not want a house that was too huge, too fancy, or too ostentatious.”
She went on to explain, “It’s a light, happy house,” and added that the kids would probably be skating on the long way that runs through the house. In a humorous vein, David said they would not have any staff living with them because “we like to lock the doors at night and go around naked.” Besides, Victoria admitted that the affair “a really tough time” situation for both families, and she moreover suggested that the incident exposed “quite a lot of people putting a price on it.”
Beckhams came out of the situation positively and with more strength
They experienced the scandal, established their own careers and family, and now benefit from each other more than before.
Victoria confesses that they “survived the storm together,” which implies that the union had its rough moments but that the pair managed to overcome and become more loved: “After all these years, we still find humor in our company when we get back home.” She launched her own fashion brand and David was brilliant with the Galaxy, which ushered MLS into the spotlight and he won two championships. Their family became larger with the arrival of their daughter Harper Seven on July 10, 2011, and the Beckhams are of the opinion that their relationship and family are still the biggest indicators of success despite their escalating fame.

David Beckham on Family, Retirement And Real Estate
Family first — then trophies, retirement and a global property portfolio.
“I have my wife. I have my four kids. I have parents, grandparents, and three really good friends. That is all you need,” David told Men’s Health in 2012, and then added, “I’d rather have three really good friends than 20 good friends.” In 2013, at 38, he retired after his farewell game at Paris Saint-germain when they won the Ligue 1 trophy.
It has been reported that the Beckhams are living in a $45 million Holland Park house in London since 2016 – a short drive from Victoria’s Hammersmith HQ. They also have a $8 million Cotswolds weekend cottage and a $24 million Miami house. Besides soccer, David is the club president and co‑owner of Inter Miami CF, which made the headlines worldwide by acquiring Lionel Messi in 2023.
Brooklyn Beckham on Marriage — and His Parents’ Advice
“Just love each other…keep working and just try and have fun,” his parents counseled.
At her family’s Palm Beach estate in April 2022, Brooklyn Beckham tied the knot with Nicola Peltz. Talking about the help he and Nicola got, Brooklyn told E! Daily Pop in August 2022 that his parents gave the new couple the following suggestion: “just love each other, try and not worry about anything. Keep working and just try and have fun.”
David Beckham has stated that he and Victoria’s relationship that lasts has its roots in the principles they were taught by their parents. In a BBC Radio 4 interview in 2017, he admitted that marriage is not a walk in the park — “of course you make mistakes” — but the point is to overcome difficulties, communicating, and understanding each other better than anyone else.

Family, not fame: why the Beckhams stay together
“Is it a brand thus we remain together? Definitely not,” said David, emphasizing that their marriage is kept alive by love and the four children they are committed to. “We remain together because of love and also because we have four wonderful children.”
Victoria also pointed out that the lie stories from the tabloids are already well established in their life — and the aftermath does more than the couple. “People have been fabricating our love story for the last 20 years,” she relayed to British Vogue, referencing that such imprints “have a wider impact on the people around us, and that is not right.” However, they have found ways to ignore the noise and focus on each other as Victoria put it: “We are not as strong as individuals, but we are more powerful together.”
