Sarah Ferguson Loses Freedom of the City of York Over Epstein Connections
Former Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson has been officially deprived of her Freedom of the City of York title after the local councillors made a unanimous decision.
Following her public discussion of the former friendship that she had with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the local authority decided that they will retract this honor which is the highest award of the city.
Ferguson was treated just like her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, who was also stripped of the same honor four years ago. Besides that, it was only a few months ago that Ferguson was no longer the Duchess of York when Andrew gave up his Duke of York title due to the ongoing scandal of his association with Epstein.

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew Removed from Freedom of the City of York
Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew have been stripped of their Freedom of the City of York titles, a wedding present honor given to them back in 1987.
This privilege, which has been bestowed on luminaries like Sir Winston Churchill and Dame Judi Dench over the years, was taken away after the city councillors unanimously agreed to the withdrawal.
Prince Andrew is the first person from those who have been granted this honor to have it taken away by the city when the public learned that he had paid a multi-million-pound settlement to Virginia Giuffre whom he allegedly sexually assaulted. She further claimed that she was introduced to the prince by Ghislaine Maxwell who is currently under a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.
In the wake of revelations about her connection with Jeffrey Epstein, Ferguson’s honor has been taken away. Both Andrew and Ferguson were severely criticized by the media and the public due to their connections to the disgraced financier.
Sarah Loses York Honor as Epstein Connections Resurface
Sarah Ferguson’s links to Jeffrey Epstein have once again become a matter of public debate after the disclosure of the so-called “Epstein files.”
One of the disclosures showed that Ferguson, who was financially supported by Epstein, had sent him a message in 2009 asking him to “just marry me”, at that time, he was already a convicted sex offender (a year since his conviction of soliciting a minor for prostitution).
In the council session at York’s Guildhall, Liberal Democrat councillor Darryl Smalley, who had initially put forward the proposal to remove Prince Andrew’s honor, talked about their first decision. “That was the first time in the city’s history that a honour had been removed, ” he said, adding at that time he was even asked if Ferguson should also be stripped of her honour.
Ultimately, the recent revelations resulted in a unanimous vote to take away Ferguson’s Freedom of the City of York.

She Loses York Honor After Epstein Links Reopen
Sarah Ferguson had her Freedom of the City of York revoked when the councillors present voted unanimously that the honor be taken back from her due to her connections to Jeffrey Epstein being exposed again.
Liberal Democrat councillor Darryl Smalley at the time of debate revealed that for him the modification of Ferguson’s status was not really becoming a compelling matter. In other words, he felt it was not right to judge her by her ex-husband’s actions. On the flip side, he admitted that recently disclosed papers showed that she was not only a friend of Epstein but also kept meeting him even after he was convicted.
“We don’t expect them to be saints if they are the ones receiving York’s highest honor, ” said Smalley. “We just don’t want them to be best friends of convicted paedophiles. We are with the victims. We support the law. We support decency.”
Gwen Swinburn, a member of the public, also spoke to councillors, saying that such a connection is harmful to the city’s image. “More and more it looks like the ‘disgraced’ York family… Not only in the UK but everywhere in the world, ” she said. “Our city’s name is what is now connected to it. It is a little by little destroying the reputation of this city.”
Sarah Loses Freedom of the City of York Due to Epstein Connections
After the recent uncovering of her ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the councillors voted unanimously to take away from Sarah Ferguson the Freedom of the City of York, which is a time-honored privilege.
During the debate, a few councillors noted that people who receive the highest honor from the city should also embody the qualities of such a distinction in their way of life. Leader of the Labour group, Claire Douglas, stated that the ones who kept meeting with Epstein even after everyone knew about his crimes “are really not up to the standard of these expectations, ” and she continued by saying that Ferguson “is one of them.”
Another person speaking in favour of the proposal, Gwen Swinburn, said that this affiliation is harming the reputation of York and that the name of the city is more and more being connected with the “disgraced” York family.
The Freedom of the City of York, having a history of over 700 years, is nowadays mostly a ceremonial gesture but still one of the highest honors of the city. Having been granted this privilege at the same time as Prince Andrew in 1987, Ferguson hasn’t appeared publicly since December.
