LL COOL J “THE FORCE” Album Review

LL COOL J’s Welcome Back

LL COOL J’s most recent release, THE FORCE, is another landmark in his illustrious journey that brings him right back to Def Jam Recording. This is important because LL COOL J first release, “I Need A Beat,” came out in 1984, and was his debut ever as well as the first song by Def Jam. Now, 40 years later, LL COOL J ‘THE FORCE’ bridges the gap that exists in his long association with the label, outlining carefully its place in his chronicle. The career is not over yet and this laments at the end of the album, but has the feel of a glorious, pompous resurrection.

In 1984, LL COOL J and Def Jam began walking the same path, making the very first step to the one of the most charismatic labels geography. At this time, THE FORCE brings that 40 year partnership to the surface once again. This release comes as an emotional piece with not only a progression but a completion. This goes a long way in expressing the longevity of LL career as well as the influence that Def Jam has had in the development of hip-hop through the years.

LL COOL J may not have plans to retreat from the music business at this time as we see in THE FORCE, but that doesn’t mean his latest album is an outright radical turn. Hip hop, having just celebrated its fifty years anniversary, is in a very different place than it was when LL first made his mark. The genre has evolved, and the rap game today is almost unrecognizable compared to its early years. This backdrop gives the album a certain gravity, as LL bridges the gap between the past and the present, reflecting on both his career and the changes in hip-hop culture.

First Album in Over a Decade

Another one of the interesting details of THE FORCE is that it’s LL COOL J’s first album in 11 years. Having waited for more than 10 years for a new album to be released, the long wait for this project was a bit over the top. The question some fans and critics were having was how the rapper would return amid young and new genre dominated by new trends and sounds. Despite the long hiatus, LL COOL J proves that his skills have not dulled. The hip-hop genre, and its accompanying sound and lifestyle, has experienced evolution over time as different generations contribute to it. The versatility of LL COOL J makes him remain relevant while being original, which demarcates THE FORCE.

The listener on the other hand sees in this work of art how he can change, only this time without losing the basic characteristics that made him a revolutionary in the first place. Thus, one of the features that make THE FORCE interesting is time: even after decades of LL COOL J’s activity, the album still seems to revolve and energize. The ambition that typified his formative years is still very much alive in this project. It is obvious that the man has not gone cold; the positive drive is present in every mesh of the album. There are no clichés associated with an old artist longing for glory or sounds reminiscent of past eras in the songs. It is modern, animated, and fresh, and has firm footing within today’s rap culture.

Grounded in Skill and Passion

A big reason for THE FORCE’s success is LL COOL J’s undeniable mastery of the fundamental skills that define great rap. Perfect in every sense from flow, to lyricism and even down to the story line. However, the record is also more than just about technical ableism, it is passion driven. And therefore, it’s easy to understand why LL COOL J is so focused on the particular project, since this one stands out from his other works. The excitement is overwhelming and there is no doubt this CD was made for the love of hip hop and not out of sheer responsibility.

As far as the album is concerned, the production especially deserves a special mention, which was managed by Q-Tip. His influence gives THE FORCE a unique sound, blending classic hip-hop elements with modern production techniques. The addition of Q-Tip brings a new layer of music to the songs and intertwines perfectly with the raps of LL COOL J. With these two legends able to combine forces, they seem to have found place where old school meets new – integrate rather than collide.

Possibly the most remarkable achievement in the performance of THE FORCE is the way and the extent to which LL COOL J is able to adapt his iconic identity to the present day. For instance, He does not make any attempts to conform to what is popular at the moment or what the current fashion of music is all about. Rather, he remains focused on self, trusts himself so much, yet comes up with a project that people relate with today. This bears to note that the level of skill is not confined within the frame of time, and indeed LL COOL J’s status among hip hop artists will not be questioned.

A Fusion of Styles in THE FORCE

THE FORCE, which has Q-Tip as the main producer, it is clear that Q-Tip can mix and match styles and sounds with ease rather than situating himself within the bounds of the stereotype of boom-bap. Instead of sticking to a cutthroat conservative sound, Q-Tip tries out various instruments and sounds to ensure the album is not the same. This approach to the project makes it more enjoyable because its multi-dimensionality in terms of production helps to elevate the entire experience.

The opening track, “Spirit of Cyrus,” which features Snoop Dogg, immediately sets the tone for the album’s experimental nature. The song is a perfect example of Q-Tip’s skillful fusion of atmospheric sounds with hard hitting beats. The ambient sounds of nature at night; chirping crickets and a subtle breeze provide a vivid backdrop to LL COOL J’s powerful commentary on police brutality. This contrast between the natural environment and the harsh reality of societal issues creates a compelling listening experience.

What is more, the song would not attain such a height were it not for its other diverse instrumental components. Bouncy drum lines save the mix from becoming monotonous while the heavy guitar wahs and strange synths spice it all up. Ecstatic voice snippets from previous artists ooz down the entire instrumental track helping to create an eerie atmosphere. These combine to blend the song structures in the best possible way.

Contemporary Mixes

One of THE FORCE Highlights is how its songs have an even greater sense of movement and life because of modern mixing techniques. Such is the case with every club track on this album: every single track has been mixed in such a manner that every sound – bass lines to delicate surround elements – is prominent and hits hard. Quality of production on this album is very crucial to the achievement of the album because, it brings out the versatile beats of Q-Tip.

The contemporary mixes add value to the songs hence making them sound more energetic than what would be permitted in a regular boom-bap song. This meticulous work is not lost even on the rest of the album, as every other track has its own unique sound but still manages to stay in context with the whole project. However, the richness of the mixes makes the album interesting until the last track is heard and with each play one will discover something new.

Black Code Suite featuring Sona Jobarteh is a track that offers a pleasing combination of different timbres within a structural architecture that is somehow unique. The songs has various instrumental sections which change as the song progresses thus maintaining the interest of the listener every time from one surface to another. A world music perspective flourish by incorporating another element of Sona Jobarteh. The use of traditional samples with the contemporary hip hop percussion is absolutely nothing but beautiful to listen to. Even then, the evolution of the song surprises throughout, and the changes in sonic beats in each section makes it one of the best songs of the album.

Proclivities Delivers a Dreamy Sound

Another highlight on the album is “Proclivities,” featuring Saweetie. This track takes a more dreamy and woozy approach to its production, showcasing Q-Tip’s ability to craft beats that are both atmospheric and hard hitting. There is a grandeur about the instrumental, with the assistance of Saweetie who adds a touch of contemporary elements to the piece. The dreamy quality of “Proclivities” clearly distinguishes it from the other tracks in the album and creates a window for self pondering and relaxation. The lush soundscape further tranquilizes the listeners making it one of the most sonically tracks ever recorded by LL COOL J.

One of the most unexpected tracks on THE FORCE is “30 Decembers,” which features a surprisingly psychedelic guitar line that dazzles and captivates. This song breaks away from the more traditional hip hop sound and ventures into new territory, with its psychedelic influences adding a fresh dimension to the album. The guitar line is mesmerizing, weaving through the track and giving it a dream like quality that contrasts with the grounded themes of LL COOL J’s lyrics.

The psychedelic elements in “30 Decembers” are a testament to Q-Tip’s willingness to push the boundaries of hip-hop production. By incorporating elements of rock and psychedelia, he creates a track that feels both timeless and forward-thinking. The blend of genres makes the song a unique standout, adding to the diversity of the album’s sound.

LL COOL J’s Lyricism: A Timeless Mastery

When it comes to lyricism, LL COOL J proves once again that he hasn’t lost his touch. He converted every word into lyrical capability effortlessly and managed to retain the listener’s focus completely. By now, LL has managed to become a great storyteller who uses metaphors effectively, and on THE FORCE, he goes all out once again. Whoever the audience is, whether it is a soul searching audience or an angry one, he knows how to construct each and every phrase to its most delicate aspect. His rendition of this craft is indirectly spoken to be both a classic and modern which is the reason why he is one of the best in today’s hip-hop.

On the track “Praise Him” featuring Nas, LL COOL J addresses more interesting and thought-provoking ideas, like making connections between religion and culture in an easier way. Indeed, one of those lines was my favorite one: “For the sake of equality, I’m fathering the song/ Spirit of God, bring he and her along,” demonstrates his ability to tackle complex issues in simple yet powerful ways. This track is a single-issue ode that reflects on themes of equality and unity, highlighting LL’s ongoing commitment to exploring both spiritual and cultural dimensions in his music. His collaboration with Nas enhances the gravity of the track, as both rappers bring their signature introspection to the forefront. The balance between LL COOL J’s spiritual reflections and cultural commentary gives the track a sense of depth that resonates well beyond the music itself.

Wordplay And Aggression

Shifting gears, LL COOL J turns up the heat on “Murdergram Deux” featuring Eminem. Emanating his forceful voice and aggressive style, LL focuses on word play in this track as he makes extraordinary extensive rhyme patterns to capture the attention. As for one line from these “This Halloween: them candy bars’ll get you killed in the forest,” every word he writes is gender loaded and filled with captivating pictures. Although the song is therapy for most fans, it takes LL COOL J to a whole new dimension as this particular track is more combative demonstrating his rap alter ego. Eminem’s presence on the track elevates the energy even further, making “Murdergram Deux” a standout moment where two rap legends collide, both delivering razor-sharp verses.

LL COOL J is never hesitant, let alone ashamed, on the issue of generation gaps in THE FORCE. Not quite self-centered, these lyrics further examine the changes in hip hop and in society relative to his scope from his early years in the game. These reflections enrich the meaning of his songs as he weighs up the hardships and triumphs of the struggles in the past against the present experience of the younger generations. He also expands on Pan Africanism ideals and solidarity among fellow blacks, a testament to his unrelenting desire to elevate his people through his art. LL COOL J’s ability to bridge his personal thoughts with the larger sociopolitical context of the time all lends to his music remaining relevant to its listeners regardless of the time frame within which they live.

The Struggle with Repetition

The repetition in themes and flows is probably one of the salient disadvantages of not only this album but also many albums of this genre. The same mid-tempo groove structure is sustained on many songs rendering the energy of the album steady and somewhat low. Yet, repetitive patterns can work in ones favor yet here it sometimes creates boredom. The flow and delivery feel a bit too familiar at times, with some songs failing to stand out from the rest in terms of innovation or approach

Tracks like “Runnit Back” exemplify this issue, as the exploration of wealth and competition doesn’t bring much new to the table. While LL COOL J’s delivery is strong and his technical skill undeniable, the track lacks the freshness that could make it truly memorable. It revisits themes that LL has mastered in the past but without introducing a new perspective or twist to keep it exciting.

Nevertheless despite these petty gripes with originality on thematic development, the quality of production on each track is high quality. Q-Tip and the other producers behind THE FORCE do an excellent job of creating a sonic landscape that is both engaging and versatile. For example, the resuscitated and warped ’80s drum machine worship on “Post Modern” offers a nostalgic yet modernized sound that breathes life into the track. The beats across the project are crisp, clean, and polished, which is good since it provides a base for LL COOL J to go into his lyrical prowess. The production still manages to capture the listener’s attention even when the themes appear to be on memory lane. The sonic textures range from strong drums juice to smooth bass and create colorful imagery further enhancing the listening experience.

Conclusion

Fortunately for JS, the conclusion of THE FORCE serves the purpose of LL COOL J far well than enhancing on the attention of the viewers. This is an album which shows the experience of LL COOL J for decades although it at times has similar voices in themes and flows. The beat is still expected to remain the highlight of the album bringing some new changes that are sometimes robbed by the lyrics. THE FORCE is very good even though there are simple mistakes that do not overcome the quality of the release and are why this release deserves honorable mention in LL COOL J’s collection.

Although it does not reinvent the wheel as one may like it to do, the album is still quite enjoyable particularly to those who cherish old school hip-hop. Yes, there is a feeling of repetitiveness now and then, but it doesn’t spoil the merits of the album as a whole. LL COOL J is just as good as ever, THE FORCE is a testament to his staying power, even though there may not be as much room for improvement as one would wish.
