Martin Short’s daughter, Katherine Hartley Short has passed away at the age of 42. Various media sources state that it is a death due to an apparent suicide.
A representative for the Only Murders in the Building star told Page Six on Tuesday, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Katherine Hartley Short.”
“The Short family is heartbroken by this loss and is requesting for privacy during this difficult time. Katherine was dear to everyone and her memory will live on through the happiness and brightness she put in the world,” the spokesperson added.
TMZ who quoted a police report wrote that Katherine, a social worker, was discovered dead at her home in Hollywood Hills, Calif., at about 6 p.m. Monday. The report goes on to say that she suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to The Los Angeles Fire Department, they had dispatched to a situation of potential shooting after a 911 call was received at the said location. “At 6:41 p.m., we responded to a reported shooting at that address,” the department stated, continuing, “A female was pronounced dead.”

Martin Short’s Daughter Katherine Hartley Short Remembered as Family Mourns Loss
Katherine was the couple’s adopted daughter. The 75-year-old actor and his wife, Nancy Dolman, who breathed her last to cancer in 2010, were her parents.
Short and Dolman have been partners for 30 years and have adopted two sons together, Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36.
From an interview with People magazine, it can be gathered that Katherine was a student of New York University and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies in 2006. Later she decided to become a social worker.

Immediately after her graduation from the bachelor’s program, Katherine continued her studies and completed a master’s degree in social work at the University of Southern California in 2010. She was a social worker in private practice and, at the same time, she held a part-time position at Amae Health clinic, a charity that provides psychotherapy and outreach services, both of which she was engaged in when she died.
Besides that, Katherine was a mental health advocate and as such, she collaborated with Bring Change 2 Mind, a charity that works for dismantling the stigma attached to mental illness.
In fact, for the most part, she preferred to stay away from the public eye but on a few occasions over the years, she accompanied her father to public events.

Martin Short and Katherine Walked Far Apart Most of the Time but Met Publicly Sometimes
Katherine was a very private person and only went along with her father to a few events, over the years.
The last time the couple was publicly photographed together was in 2023 when they celebrated Katherine’s 40th birthday at Grand Master Recorders in Hollywood. Before that, the couple was seen at a 2021 pre-Emmy party at the Kimpton La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood. The very first times that they went out together were to the after-party for the Los Angeles production of The Producers in 2003 and Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project event in 2005.
