Dave Hughes Responds to Backlash Over Onstage Cup Incident
Australian comedian Dave Hughes defended himself against critics who were angered by his urinating in “a cup” of another comedian to prevent stage accidents. Brisbane comedian David “Hughesy” Hughes made a humorous remark while chatting with Ricki-Lee and Tim on the radio show of Nova 96.9 this morning. Hughesy joked, “I only did it a very few times, and the truth is, I will probably be a gentleman and not do it again.”
When Melanie Bracewell, the New Zealand comedienne-born Australian, publicly disclosed her shock on Monday that Hughesy had “gone pee” in one of her glasses for the stage, which he had to use because he couldn’t go to the bathroom, people were astonished.
Bracewell stated, “It is a thing that Hughesy does often, and it’s not the kind of thing that would require a waiter to come and clean up,” and she reminded everyone of the event where the two comedians first met in 2022—the time when the whole thing started.
According to Hughesy, the Melbourne Comedy Festival venue that he was referring to doesn’t provide toilets backstage. Thus, one has to either take the risk of going to the restrooms in sight of the audiences who are standing packed together or one has to get rid of the problem in that way.

“One minute to go before showtime. Get ready, man. It is a radio show anyway,” he told the hosts. “Imagine a drink glass, and you’re automatically saying, ‘Oh god, we have to get into that glass.'” “The comic added that since he was alone, he “wasn’t exposing” himself to anyone. “So you go to the glass, and then, after the show, you retrieve the glass and take it to the bathroom,” he explained further.
Hughesy’s confession was that he had sometimes had the audience’s eyes on him by taking selfies after showtime while in the bathroom with a glass of the substance. “That is definitely not a pleasant situation,” he said. Only after he had flushed the glass contents down was he informed that the glass had belonged to another artist.
He Vows Not to Repeat Cup Incident
Hughesy said he actually laughed at the time and contacted the person, now known to be Bracewell. “So you just put it behind you for another four years until it gets mentioned in a comment to someone else’s Instagram, and suddenly you’re the worst guy on Earth.” “I just try to live my life, people! It was the first and last… I only did it those two or three times.”
