Christy Carlson Romano shares a heartfelt health update after cancer screening
Christy Carlson Romano got emotional when talking about a very important health announcement. The 41-year-old actress and Vulnerable podcast host posted a tearful video on Instagram on Tuesday, February 17, revealing her recent health experience.
Romano told her fans that she and her husband, Brendan Rooney, had cancer screenings because of her family history filled with cancer. She mentioned that both of her parents were diagnosed with cancer; her mother is a survivor, but her father “eventually didn’t.” On top of that, she revealed that her grandmother on her mother’s side died of lung cancer.
While in Florida for a shoot, the couple received their test results. “My husband’s was totally negative,” Romano shared. She then took a pause and let out a breath. “Mine didn’t come back negative,” she said.
Christy Carlson Romano Will Have a PET Scan After Worrying Screening Results
Christy Carlson Romano revealed that her next step will be a PET scan. It is a process that “uses a radioactive tracer to look for the presence of cancer, heart disease and brain disorders,” as per the Cleveland Clinic. She disclosed that she is at present “engaged in disputes with companies” to have the scan covered by the insurance.
The actress emotionally attacked the topic of the death of actor James Van Der Beek, who passed away at 48 on Feb. 11 after lung cancer diagnosis in August 2023. While reflecting on that, Carly broke down recording the emotional video and James Van Der Beek was one of the main characters of the series. Talking a little bit about the time when it happened to them, she stated that in Austin, she met some times Van Der Beek and his support for the local community was noteworthy.
“I live in Austin, and I was able to meet James Van Der Beek a bunch. His family’s amazing. He’s a pillar of our community in Texas,” said she, who also mentioned that they helped charitable causes. “They always were raising money for the most amazing charities, and he’s not with us anymore. Cancer is everywhere. Which is why I got this test.”

Christy Carlson Romano confessed that she hardly believes the result of her screening test, but she tried to concentrate on her work and her forthcoming memoir. The Even Stevens actress revealed that it has been a “very vulnerable time” for her, as it hasn’t even been a year since she survived a dreadful shooting accident in the eye during a clay pigeon sporting event.
Romano felt a deep trust in God despite the strong measures of uncertainty. “Now it’s time to be really strong in faith and to surrender to God,” she said. She also added addressing potential naysayers, “I’m sure that some people think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not, because cancer is really serious and I do have two little girls.”
Romano, who is married to Brendan Rooney and has daughters Sophia (7) and Isabella (9), got sentimental when she talked about the significance of gratitude. “For someone like me, life is really just a constant struggle and I have to be really grateful for all the wonderful stuff around me,” she said and also suggested that her book would reveal even more about the hardships she has been through personally.

Christy Carlson Romano admitted that she was “nervous and a bit scared” when she got the results of her health screening which were quite alarming. At first, she didn’t really want to post about it but on second thought, she went ahead to share her story for the purpose of inspiring those who haven’t gotten screened to consider doing so.
Romano shared in her caption, “At the moment, the updates are that there is something going on.” “I’m nervous and a bit scared (really who wouldn’t be?)” She also promised to “not stop looking for answers” and thanked her “loving family,” for their constant support.
Romano asked for positive energy in her post and informed that she will continue to share updates with her followers as she discovers more. Brendan Rooney, her husband, also commented on the post saying, “You got this my beautiful wife. We will figure this out and destroy any problem that comes your way. I love you beyond words.”
