Charles Barkley Calls ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins An “Idiot And A Fool” In Scathing Rant

Barkley’s Ongoing Remarks

Charles Barkley has for more than ten years criticized ESPN coverage of basketball, and he has always given his thoughts in a straightforward manner. In actuality, he keeps attacking the network for the simple fact that they are biasing towards special teams, particularly when the team’s performance doesn’t deserve the spotlight. Besides, he has time and again hit out at the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors who even at the tail end of the standings were still getting the maximum coverage. Lately, his narrative has once again been about these two franchises, who were to be out of the playoffs in the Western Conference, but then suddenly found their stride. At first, it seemed like the Lakers and the Warriors were going to wither again, due to their positions in the lower part of the seeds and barely reaching the 500 mark.

However, they have now both turned into the two most amazing teams in the league. In an intensively breathtaking turn, Los Angeles Lakers traded for Luka Doncic, the superstar, shocking the basketball world with a surprising trade that no other NBA teams had ever done. Therefore, with their rise to the second place, the record stands at the incredible series of eight win in the Western Conference. This surge took place after they spent the first half of the year floating in the standings, with no real hope. Still, the Warriors were also an influential party who had a trade for a Miami Heat player, Jimmy Butler, who brought life and spark to the team. Moreover, Stephen Curry appears reinvigorated and is performing at a level close to his MVP days, causing excitement to skyrocket among Warriors fans.

Blockbuster Deals Spark Hot Streaks

With these high-profile trades, both the Lakers and Warriors transformed from underwhelming teams into legitimate contenders that now dominate discussions about the NBA playoff race. In fact, Barkley recognizes the accomplishments of both clubs, but he thinks that ESPN is spending too much air time on both the Lakers and the Warriors, and they might not need it. Given a time when they almost fell out of the playoff scene, the Lakers and the Warriors had a remarkable term filled with great performances and outstanding victories. Additionally, observers around the league have been amazed by the remarkable contributions of Luka Doncic on the Lakers, as well as the renewed form of Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry with the Warriors.

In spite of these teams’ undeniable improvements, Charles Barkley has maintained that ESPN’s constant Lakers and Warriors content has gone too far. He points a finger squarely at ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins, whom he believes is guilty of giving outsize credit to the Lakers for supposedly “saving the NBA season.” Furthermore, Perkins declared that the Lakers going 22-7 in their 29 games since the start of 2025 is definitive proof of their league-altering move. Barkley, along with co-host Shaquille O’Neal on Inside The NBA, has taken pleasure in poking fun at Perkins’s opinions. On Thursday’s episode of Inside, Barkley went so far as to label Perkins an “idiot and a fool.”

The Endless GOAT Debate

Not content to limit his critique to coverage of the Lakers and Warriors, Charles Barkley also directed attention to ESPN’s persistent chatter regarding the Michael Jordan versus LeBron James debate. He argued that the network devotes too many segments to that rivalry, endlessly revisiting the same angles instead of exploring new stories. As he sees it, there are always fresh topics in the NBA that merit more serious investigation and dialogue. Yet, ESPN continually comes back to the same discussions, most notably the GOAT debate and a focus on high-profile franchises like the Lakers and Warriors. Ultimately, Barkley remains resolute in using his platform to voice his annoyance, mixing blunt observations with humor as he continues to take jabs at ESPN’s programming choices.

Charles Barkley unleashed a heated tirade by bluntly declaring, “I saw a fool, idiot talking about how the Lakers saved the NBA. Yeah, he’s an idiot and a fool.” He opened his rant with these bold words, emphasizing how strongly he disagreed with the idea that the Los Angeles Lakers had somehow rescued the entire league. At first, he claimed he had no intention of mentioning any names. However the moment Shaquille O’Neal nudged him to identify who he was talking about, Barkley did not hesitate.

Identifying the Target

With little prompting, he revealed, “Kendrick Perkins. He said that.” Barkley was adamant that Perkins’s statement about the Lakers was misguided. He quickly added that the Lakers might be on a great run for two weeks, but he could not accept the grand claim that they had saved the NBA season. He also dismissed the narrative promoted by “the fools on the other network,” referring to ESPN, which he pointed out would soon be home to the Inside The NBA team. Barkley made it clear that he was ready for any backlash by stating, “Let me tell y’all something, I want all the smoke. “I am not the type of guys who would whistle when walking by a graveyard, I don’t believe in anything like that.”

Moreover, staying on his note, Charles Barkley switched the topic and scorned ESPN for undermining other equally deserving teams, such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was frustrated because the Thunder and Cavaliers currently hold the top seeds in the Western and Eastern Conferences, yet they do not receive as much coverage as the Lakers or other popular franchises. He also lambasted any television personality who engages in endless debates over Michael Jordan and LeBron James solely for the sake of ratings. According to Barkley, pundits who rely on that conversation for viewership have “no talent,” revealing his disapproval of turning the discussion into a constant marketing tool rather than genuine analysis.

Stephen A. and Perkins Clash

Meanwhile, Stephen A. Smith, considered the public face of ESPN, decided to respond with humor. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to craft a lighthearted post directed at Barkley and the rest of the TNT crew, likely because he has longstanding friendships with them. However, Kendrick Perkins chose a more confrontational path by referring to Barkley as an “older citizen” and threatening that he would fight him the next time they were in the same location. This angry retort set off a flurry of replies ridiculing Perkins for even hinting at a physical altercation over televised comments. The notion of them actually clashing in hand-to-hand combat is, of course, highly improbable.

Since Inside The NBA will move to ESPN next season, the likelihood of Barkley and Perkins encountering each other face to face in the near future is very high. This proximity might fuel more verbal sparring, even if no real brawl ever occurs. Based on each man’s behavior, one can realize the actual competition between them and it could get even harder when they both end up working under the same team. Without any doubt, it is not difficult to assume that Charles Barkley and Kendrick Perkins are not the best of friends, and viewers are eagerly waiting to see if the tension will keep growing or if the two will patch things up when they share the studio.
