Akon has been living a more quiet life in Dubai with his multiple wives for more than a decade.
“Polyamory is a natural behavior for men,” the rapper, 53, said during a Tuesday, May 19, appearance on the We Need to Talk podcast. “Now, because of the rules that [are] set around us, we control that behavior to, you can say, appease our partner because of the same rules that we’re living by, and that we’re, you can say, agreeing upon.”
“When you’re single, it’s not a problem,” he continued. “It’s only when you are attached or you’ve promised someone that this is a relationship that we’re supposed to hold in the rules that you decide to hold it in.”
Hidden behind silence, the precise count of Akon’s wives stays unknown. Yet he once slipped that his own number exceeds Senegal’s president.
“But I got the most amazing kids. I got nine all together … seven boys and two girls,” he revealed. “[But] the setup, that all depends on the person and the understanding.”
Setting Strict Boundaries for Akon Household
His wives stay exclusive within Akon’s arrangement. Nobody else gets involved. That part stays clear. Relationships outside aren’t allowed there. Boundaries hold firm in that circle.
“You got to be mature enough to know that if this is the situation that I’m going to park in, I have to communicate. This I like, this I don’t like,” he explained. “And once y’all lay down those rules, just abide by them. It’s literally that simple.”
The Sacred Status of Wife Number One
Even though he said polyamory fails without equal treatment of wives, Akon still called the first wife “the queen.”
“That’s always because that one is the reason why you even got one, two, or three,” he said. “Nobody violates wife number one. The moment they violate out the door. Hands down.”
