Elizabeth Holmes’ Last Days of Freedom Before Prison Revealed
Elizabeth Holmes began her prison sentence in 2023, but recently, the public’s attention to her personal life has increased once again due to the documentary film titled You Can See Everything. Almost three hours long, the film depicts a meeting between Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim with Elizabeth Holmes, the former Theranos CEO and the company’s founder, as well as Billy Evans, Holmes’s long-time partner, in the days prior to the start of her May 2023 sentence. Holmes was imprisoned after being convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. She was later sentenced to almost 12 years in prison in November 2022. Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans, who comes from a family of hotel business moguls, met in 2017 and became engaged the next August. They first welcomed son William in 2021 and daughter Invicta in 2023 — which was before the initially scheduled start of her April 2023 prison sentence. I was only going to ask him to marry me once,” Elizabeth Holmes recalled of Billy Evans in a Texas prison interview with PEOPLE in February 2025. However, “He really made it hard for me to give up this chance.”

Elizabeth Holmes’ Past With Sunny Balwani and Her Life With Billy Evans
Holmes turned the public world upside down in the early 2000s when she created a blood-testing service company called Theranos. Later, it was revealed by a federal jury that the company operated a fraudulent scheme for about a year-long period. Elizabeth Holmes, after the Fielder documentary in 2026, was portrayed in other films too, like the HBO documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley and a Hulu series called The Dropout starring Amanda Seyfried. Holmes’ real-life romance with her ex-boyfriend and former Theranos executive Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani was the basis for depicting that part of the story. (Balwani was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2022.)

How Billy Evans and Elizabeth Holmes Met and Fell Fast
He and Holmes decided to get married in 2018. The meeting between Holmes and Evans was initiated by a common friend in 2017 at a charity function. They managed to have a deep conversation for an hour and a half in a row. She gave her insight to “The New York Times” during their shared interview in 2023, saying, “I was in two years of continuous media attention. Getting to know someone from the standpoint of your doubt is really a different experience compared to, for instance, meeting when everything’s just perfect.” She continued, “This helped us build a really honest relationship with each other.”
The engagement date for the two happened in August of the year 2018. Filming You Can See Everything is when Holmes and Evans’ private life became the talk of the town; they didn’t reveal much otherwise. In 2019, Nick Bilton, a correspondent of Vanity Fair, came to know about the couple’s private social media accounts and shared some of their pictures online via X. One photo features the couple kissing. The caption by Evans was, “Happy birthday to my best friend. The last year has been the best I’ve ever had.”

Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans Share Two Young Children
They have two children. In July of 2021, she delivered their son William Holmes Evans in Redwood City, Calif. The pregnancy delayed the trial, which was already being pushed back several times due to the pandemic. After Holmes’s sentencing in January 2022, she got pregnant, and the fact was revealed to The Times by November 2022.
At Holmes’s sentencing, photos showed her pregnant. She was to be turned in to the federal authorities about 1 week prior to April 27, 2023, when she gave birth to a second child (her daughter), Invicta, which means “unconquered” in Latin. Sitting down with PEOPLE, Holmes, who was then incarcerated and free pending her appeal, commented on the speculation that maybe Holmes and Evans used having children not just for family but also as a ploy for the courts. “It’s true the visuals don’t look very inviting, but at the bottom line I have loved the idea of becoming a mother,” she said. “I could never envision myself getting a conviction or being proven guilty. I used to call my lawyers very regularly, and they were also optimistic to the extent that we should never reach this point.”
She later added: “It was not planned, and I don’t want to waste my time thinking about others’ opinions. It was just the timing that decided.” In a rare and honest self-reflection, she shared, “The truth is that I had to cope with much longer confinement than I had planned. I have always dreamed of getting kids; Billy was even more eager for us to have more kids than that. We were lucky to experience the joy of a big family amid the darkness of the situation.” And Holmes lamented, “I am very much regretting that right now I am behind bars and that my kids are growing up without me; their daddy is missing the best moments of their lives. I know people can judge me, but after all, my marriage and raising kids are definitely the highlights of my personal journey. They mean everything to me. I love them.”
Billy Evans Stood by Throughout Fraud Trial
He was by Holmes’ side during her trial. Holmes’ trial wrapped up on Jan. 3, 2022. There’s a report saying Holmes was found guilty on five of the 11 charges, three being wire fraud and the fourth a conspiracy to commit wire fraud, while the others were dismissed. As per the Associated Press, Holmes had no discernible emotion when the guilty verdicts were announced, but, on the contrary, Evans was seen very much disturbed while he was getting a glass of water after the verdicts. Besides his father, Bill was also there for part of the trial.
Although during the press interviews Bill said that he was only a “concerned citizen” and that his name was “Hanson”, “Evans” remained a constant presence throughout the trial and usually sat in the rows together with Holmes’ family that were marked as their exclusive one. Come November 2022, when Holmes was due to receive her sentence, it was no small feat for him to beseech the court for a lenient penalty. In his submission, he said that Holmes is going to miss a lot of unique days by the side of their son. “It would really break my heart that Liz and I would have to be separated for days or even nights,” he said, “and the scenario is that our son will get close to his mother as he stands behind glass that’s guarded by armed men.”

Elizabeth Holmes Says Prison Visits From Family Shatter Her
He continued to stand by Holmes through her trial. Holmes was found guilty on four counts out of eleven when her trial ended on 3rd Jan. 2022. She was convicted on three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. As per the Associated Press, Holmes remained composed while the judges were handing out their guilty verdict. Conversely, Evans became quite emotional as he poured himself a glass of water after the judges’ verdicts were announced. Evans’ mom, Bill, was also present for part of the trial, although he didn’t show up to the trial as a parent or attorney but pretended to be a “concerned citizen” and even identified himself as “Hanson” when the press interviewed him during voir dire.
According to the New York Times, throughout the trial, it was Evans you were most likely to find either sitting with Holmes’ family members or at least being present in their reserved row of seats regularly. Evans’ memo also contained his heart-wrenching plea to the court, which stated, after a sentence is given to Holmes, that she can have a lighter prison sentence and be able to see a lot of the precious moments she would be away from. “I’m totally broken by the mere idea of the day (when) I spend away from Liz will come if the son of mine becomes father and the relationship of the son and the mother will exist only behind a glass window guarded by the armed guards,” was the text of his pleading to the court in his letter.
Billy Evans and Open Home in New Documentary
Evans and Holmes both appeared in the documentary “You Can See Everything” released on Oct. 16, 2026. The film directed partly by Lance Oppenheim captured Fielder’s days spent with the couple and her two children at their house before she would leave to begin a prison sentence.
Fielder was welcomed by Evans and Holmes to stay in the guest room of their California beachfront rental house.
In the documentary, some shocking disclosures and tense moments are shown between the couple. At one stage, Fielder claimed a story that Evans was talking to the filmmakers and A24 executives about a way that they could share a part of the film profits. Another detail is also shown: Evans controls Holmes’ X account while she is in prison and has even admitted to posting and reposting questionable stuff without getting her agreement or even awareness.
