Lorde Reveals New Album
In a staggering discovery that left fans and music enthusiasts in a frenzy, the Grammy-winning artist Lorde via a live show disclosed the official release date and the name of her fourth studio album. The album titled “Virgin” is going to be released on the 27th of June and it will be her debut full-length album since the release of Solar Power in 2021. The announcement was made by Lorde at the crack of dawn with an update that was not expected on her website, leading to immediate buzz and wild speculations about the sound, themes, and flow of this new musical journey.

Along with the album title and release date, Lorde shared the striking and unusual cover artwork for Virgin, giving fans a glimpse into the visual identity surrounding the project. The cover image is an x-ray-styled, blue-tinted scan of a pelvis, creatively overlaid with a zipper running vertically down the center, a belt buckle placed in the middle, and what appears to be the faint outline of an IUD. This abstract yet significant image has already elicited multiple interpretations on the internet, with many pondering how it connects to the very personal and emotional themes Lorde suggested in her description of the album as being “100% written in blood.”
Lorde, being a very hands-on artist, has engaged a group of brilliant creatives for Virgin’s visual representation. The project was done in collaboration with strong music professionals who are mainly producers, songwriters, and musicians. The list of professionals is quite impressive, and includes Dan Nigro, who was just recently mentioned as the Grammy Producer of the Year for his songs with artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan. Also joining the project are Devonté Hynes in Blood Orange fame, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, and Buddy Ross.
Production, Mixing, and Mastering
Lorde took on the co-producer role for the record, co-working with Jim-E Stack, a revered personality in the music world whose previous recognition with Bon Iver, Gracie Abrams, and Caroline Polachek is respected. The album’s sound was made the best it could be by the including famous personalities in the industry: Spike Stent and Tom Elmhirst, handled the mixing duties, guaranteeing that the sounds were not only clear but also transporting while on the other hand, the project was mastered by Chris Gehringer, fine-tuning the project to perfection before its upcoming release.
Although the full tracklist has yet to be officially unveiled in detail, a preliminary listing on Apple Music shows the album is expected to feature 11 tracks, one of which is the newly released single, “What Was That.” This track serves as the first taste of the album’s tone and direction, introducing listeners to Lorde’s evolving artistic vision and possibly hinting at the emotional depth she has promised with this new body of work.
In the days leading up to the album’s first single release, Lorde masterminded a memorable fan encounter in New York City. The singer had organized a fan event on April 23rd at Washington Square Park, at which she had created a pop-up musical moment that deviated from conventional single releases. With Devonté Hynes giving a helping hand out of sight, Lorde exhibited a public speaker set up around the park and debuted “What Was That” to the fans. Instead of merely playing the song, she interacted with the fans, went into the crowd, sang and danced to the new single unpredictably and happily.
Music Video With a Personal Touch
Reflecting the intimate and fan-centered spirit of the release event, the music video for “What Was That” features real clips from the Washington Square Park pop-up. Rather than a high budget unreal video, Lorde chose to celebrate the raw connection with her fans, stitching together footage of the shared experience. The resulting visual is both emotional and playful, capturing not just a performance, but a genuine moment of reunion between an artist and her devoted supporters.

One of Lorde’s marketing strategies for her new album was the release of a voice note to her fans that without exception, had a deep emotional impact on various social channels. In her own words, she insinuated that something big is coming in her life and career. “She said ‘Everything is about to change,’” and then she went on to talk about her emotional burden. “These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is wild. But so right. I’m so ready” she added. The underlying meaning of this communication addressed two functions: a preview of intriguing things to come with the Virgin album, and an indirect goodbye to her past self and music, thus proposing that Virgin will be the foundation for a new, daring era.
Adding to the anticipation and momentum surrounding her return, Lorde also made a surprise appearance during the first weekend of the ‘2024 Coachella festival. She joined fellow pop innovator Charli XCX on stage for a performance of their collaborative track, “Girl, So Confusing.” The moment quickly went viral, further signaling Lorde’s reemergence into the public and creative spotlight. Her presence at such a major festival only fueled excitement about Virgin and her full comeback to the music world.
