Lares, Puerto Rico was the location where Jose Feliciano was born on September 10th, 1945. His congenital glaucoma caused him to be born blind, and he is the fourth of eleven boys in total on the family tree. During the time when he was five years old, his family moved to Spanish Harlem, which is located in New York City. As early as the age of seven, when he taught himself how to play the accordion, it became abundantly evident that he had a natural talent for music.

It was two years later that he began learning how to play the guitar that his father had given him as a gift. After practicing the guitar for as long as fourteen hours a day, he began receiving classical guitar lessons from Harold Morris, who was a staff music instructor at The LightHouse School for the Blind in New York City. Morris was a member of the faculty of the school.

Additionally, he began singing and drew influence from musicians such as Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. He began his singing career. It was when he was seventeen years old that he began playing at coffee shops all around the city. At that time, he had already dropped out of high school in order to provide for his family.

Jose Feliciano’s Historical Hits 

In the late 1960s, Puerto Rican guitarist, singer, and composer José Feliciano achieved global popularity with his attractive blend of flamenco guitar, bolero, folk, and easy-listening pop music. Feliciano is considered to be one of the most notable Latin-born artists of the pop period. 

Feliciano, who was already a star in Latin America, had a significant hit in the United States with his interpretation of the Doors’ song “Light My Fire” in 1968. However, he caused controversy with his jazzy performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” during the World Series in October of the same year. After its release in 1970, his Christmas pop anthem “Feliz Navidad” went on to become one of the most widely played songs in the history of the holiday repertoire. 

He remained a prominent touring and recording performer throughout the 1970s and 1980s, producing a variety of albums in both Spanish and English, appearing as a guest artist on albums by notable musicians such as John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and Bill Withers, and creating music for television programs such as Chico and the Man and Kung Fu. A pair of Grammy Awards were awarded to Feliciano for his album Señor Bachata, which was released in 2008, and he also recorded a high-profile collaboration with Jools Holland on the composition of the jazz and R&B set As You See Me Now, which was released in 2017. Feliciano’s fame continued into the new century as he continued to explore a range of musical forms. While he was still in demand in the seventh decade of his career, he released two albums in 2022: Right Here Waiting and Love & Christmas. Both of these albums were released independently.
