Gwyneth Paltrow Talks About the Lasting Effects of Being Betrayed

Heated emotions came back to Paltrow as she thought about her touching time again years later, she said, in an episode of the Goop podcast where she was talking with psychotherapist and author Esther Perel.

Perel said that the impact of betrayal might reach one’s soul beyond the actual deed, especially if the culprit has not adequately admitted their wrongdoing.

Perel believes that breaking your word may make you doubt your own judgment, and that will reduce your confidence in others. “In fact, you make me distrust myself, ” Perel pointed out, meaning that if you betray someone, that person might start to live in fear and worry about getting hurt again by others.

Esther Perel said that the emotional wounding can come to “haunt” a person long after the one who hurt them is completely out of their life.

The topic was then taken to cheating, with Paltrow wondering if the trust that’s been broken so deeply can be rebuilt in a couple. “How do couples who’ve experienced infidelity find a true way back to trust?” Paltrow questioned, calling infidelity a serious violation that can even make the betrayed feel like they have to keep “one eye open” perpetually.

She asked whether couples can actually rebuild trust after someone cheats. Perel answered that the short answer is “yes, ” but she added that trust can be rebuilt only in some relationships.

Perel said the effect depends on the person, pointing out that betrayal’s hurt is usually linked to one’s own experience. “For some, a one-night stand would be as painful as a 20-year affair, ” Perel added.
