Emilia Clarke Reflects on Life After Incurring Two Brain Hemorrhages: “Recovery is Just as Important as Survival.”

Emilia Clarke was having a “near-death” experience, but she was so scared that she regretted it, and death would finally come after her at some point. “There are even moments with death when I will even feel guilty that I will, I suppose, become unworthy of life after having had near-death experiences, ” she stated.

Reflecting on the times of her horror, the star, who is known for her humorous and light-hearted nature, was joking about how that event even made her think that she might be a terrible actress.

Emilia Clarke attends Variety Power of Women London and Talks about SameYou

At the Variety Power of Women event in London, Emilia Clarke mentioned SameYou in her speech. Naturally, the star and her mom did start the charity in 2019 after she revealed that she had suffered two brain hemorrhages.

Reflecting on her personal story, Clarke stated that the people’s response was tremendous, and she was even approached by a lot of young survivors sharing their own experiences. In addition, she mentioned that in the SameYou community about brain injury victims, it is through the words of the thousands that their journey to recovery is lonely and difficult.

The actress stated that brain injury survivors are still in great need of assistance and support in their new lives. This is why SameYou continues to focus on this area of their work very passionately.

Emilia Clarke Highlights SameYou’s Mission While Accepting Power of Women Honor

Emilia Clarke said there was a tremendous response from the public to her story, and some young survivors geographically even contacted her, describing their similar situations. Actually, thousands of members of the SameYou network have shared that overcoming a brain injury is very lonely and difficult.

After surviving brain hemorrhages, Emilia talks about hidden struggles

Actress Emilia Clarke said that she and her mother, Jenny Clarke, established SameYou as a way to help the brain injury survivors, as the brain injury recovery support was lacking in those days.

Clarke contended during her speech that rehabilitation facilities are rather a “lottery”, and that access to important recovery is based on the situation and not on the need. Having the ability to get back to work quickly, learn lines, and act, she believed at the time that she was fully recovered. Concurrently, she raised that the mental and emotional consequences of her brain injuries were so much more than that, leading to the need for better long-term assistance for the survivors.

Clarke talks about the lasting impact of brain trauma

Emilia Clarke went public with the fact that she denied a lot of health issues over the years after surviving two brain hemorrhages. After some thought, she now realizes that her health problems were the consequences of her brain injuries.

She recounted that hard work schedules led to the problems of extreme fatigue, nervousness, imbalance of hormones, aches, and even fainting. The actresses revealed. At that time, she was blaming the majority of her symptoms on stress and workload rather than on the effects of brain trauma.

Clarke admitted she thought she was 100% back to normal, and so did her doctors at first. Because of this, she was deeply critical of herself for having difficulties when, in fact, the problem was more medical in nature. In recent times, she reflected, “It never crossed my mind that the difficulties I was having were a result of my brain injuries.” She highlighted the fact that the knowledge of brain trauma’s long-term effects is still very limited and that one can be quite recovered on the outside but still be affected on the inside.

Emilia Clarke Seeks Better Long-Term Care for Brain Injury Survivors

According to Clarke, there are simply not enough neuropsychologists and specialist rehabilitation services to meet the demand of the increasing number of people living with the effects of brain injuries in the long term. The actress further brought up that since most brain injury survivors appear quite healthy physically, others tend to think that the recovery is complete, and eventually, patients themselves may also start to believe they have recovered, even though they continue to have difficulties.

Clarke Says After Sharing Her Story, She Was the One Who Gave Life to SameYou’s Mission

“SameYou exists to revolutionize the way in which recovering from brain injury is conceived and supported,” said Emilia Clarke.

Her announcement of her health condition in 2019 brought a huge response far beyond her expectations. Clarke told of having been contacted by thousands of people, mostly young survivors, who have undergone similar experiences.

SameYou nowadays is the support system of a great number of brain injury survivors whose stories point out recovery without any help and being abandoned by the system as one of the biggest challenges after discharge, Clarke revealed.

Emilia Clarke: Recovery Should Get as Much Attention as Survival

According to Emilia Clarke, her charity, SameYou, was born out of a deep gratitude for those who supported her recovery physically and emotionally. One of the things that first came to her mind was how she could give back to the hospital staff who, not only medically but in many other ways, helped her through the traumatic episodes of the brain hemorrhages.

Furthermore, she thinks that recovery needs to be recognized on the same level as survival. Essentially, she believes brain injury patients require regular physical and psychological assistance as well as understandable healing pathways that the healthcare system should provide. At the end of the day, the brain is basically where a person’s essence lies, their memories, personality, and sense of humor, so recovering from trauma gives one the chance to regain their life again, which is why, in Clarke’s view, recovery support should be regarded as a necessity.

Emilia Says Recovery Helped Her Get Confidence and Energy Back

In a recent interview, Emilia Clarke expressed that brain injury can alter people so deeply that they no longer recognize themselves due to extreme fear and disconnection, which is basically the loss of one’s confidence and faith in oneself too. However, Clarke, through her charity SameYou, raised the point that not giving up on oneself is something one can do even in the most devastating circumstances.

She also mentioned that it is only now that she is going through the rehabilitation process, whereas the first brain hemorrhage occurred almost 15 years ago. With the aid of Mount Sinai Health System and, in particular, David Putrino, the actress said that she has got back the energy, cheerfulness, and lifestyle of a person in their twenties. Clarke added that her transformation didn’t happen suddenly, in fact, she said that the main thing is that the road to recovery is a long one, rather than a quick fix, a work of a miracle, or an instant change.
