After her death at the age of 80 on August 25, 2026, Dolly Parton’s niece Jada Star shared the details that explained the “Jolene” singer’s decision.
According to Star, Dolly Parton “never wanted to worry anybody”, so she and her family “kept all that stuff real private”, as Star told Extra in the interview published September 1.

The star’s message can help explain the huge shock caused by the news of the legendary singer’s death. It seems that although Dolly Parton shared all the difficulties of her health status with her close ones, she did not plan to make that public.
Her family recognized the importance of keeping this information private, as it seems the circumstances were too sad for that. Surprisingly, even Star was shocked by the news: “It’s been really difficult and very surreal”, she said when speaking about this sad period of the family’s life.
Dolly Parton’s cousin and close musical collaborator Richie Owens shared a similar opinion about the circumstances of the Parton family.

She admitted that she had been going through a number of health issues and grief over the loss of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in March of 2025.

Speaking about this emotional performance, Star mentioned that she could not stop thinking about all the wise words of her aunt: “Why are you worried about what other people think?” Parton would often say to her beloved niece.
However, thinking about the wise woman that she knew and loved, Star was able to deliver the meaningful message to the fans that was intended by Parton herself. “Everything she taught me, I’ll use in everything I do,” Star said.
What Dolly Would Want Her Family to Do Next
When asked about what Dolly Parton’s family should do now, Star said that her aunt “wouldn’t want us to stay down”.

Carl Dean, the late husband of Dolly Parton, will be buried next to his wife at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville, where Dolly’s farewell took place on August 28. Instead of having a big and public funeral, she wanted a private and small gathering of family.
Rickie Owens, her cousin and a very close collaborator, clarified that they wanted to keep it very close and personal; that is exactly what it was. Also, she would rather that, instead of flowers, people would do something meaningful if they want to remember her.
It would be very appropriate for a person like her, who devoted a lot of time to philanthropic work and who became well known mostly for these causes, that people would donate in order to support the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library.

Only a few days had passed since the news of Dolly’s death when the Grand Ole Opry was doing its performance on August 29 for her, with Jada Star, her niece, performing “The Orchard,” which is a song from their 2024 Smoky Mountain family album DNA: Family, Faith and Fables. Other country stars were also present at this very emotional homage.
