Teddi Mellencamp offered a moving tribute to her father, John Mellencamp, ascribing her survival to his support during the hardest phase of her cancer fight.

“It was just a bit over a year ago that I fell ill. Even though the days in the hospital stretched endlessly, my life still seemed short to me, ” she revealed to the crowd at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. “Sometimes you get sick and you don’t get well.”

However, her father would not let that be the end of the story. Commenting on it, she said, “He simply wouldn’t allow that verse in the song to be a metaphor for my life. He came forward, took charge, fought for me, and basically changed my entire life. Saved my life.”

Besides, simply being her father, the one she called her best friend, Teddi, paid him tribute on the occasion of his receiving the Icon Award, only for John to be the one who handed the award back to her, saying, “I’m going to take this award and I’m going to give it to Teddi, so that’s yours.”

Teddi initially discovered she had stage 2 melanoma in October 2022 and has been through multiple surgeries, including an emergency operation in 2025 when the cancer had also spread to the brain and lungs.
